5.0 out of 5 stars I've had hours of fun with this one!
I had to create a review after seeing that the only existing review (as of when I'm writing this) is one trashing the game.

1.0 out of 5 stars Real Bad
This video game was based on the highly popular Manga movie Fist of the North Star. Bizarre then when you consider how terrible it is. I've no idea why they didn't just call it Fist of the North Star instead of Last Battle. Perhaps they wanted to fool people into believing they were buying Final Fight (a much better game). Tho that's still not a good enough reason for...

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Last Battle (Video Game)
I had to create a review after seeing that the only existing review (as of when I'm writing this) is one trashing the game.

First of all, "Last Battle" is based on the popular Japanese anime/manga series "Fist of the North Star", however an earlier game on the Nintendo (NES) system already obtained the American copyright on that name, and so Sega was forced to rename the game and re-color all of the sprites. Lame. Another lame move on Sega's end was editing out all of the blood for the North American release -- but they released the game during the backlash from "Mortal Kombat". Why they felt the need to edit this one I don't know.

As for the game itself, it is unlike anything I have ever played before. You are Kenshiro (Aarzak in English) a lone warrior who fights against hordes of vicious psychos in a post-apocalyptic world, similiar to "Mad Max".

The main difference is Kenshiro is the master of a deadly Chinese Kung-Fu and can kill with one punch! That's right, aside from bosses, all you need to do is punch the enemies once and they'll fly off the screen!

"Too easy"? You say? Not so! There are scores of enemies, and some of the bosses can be quite tough. The previous review claims the "third boss is IMPOSSIBLE to beat" -- untrue! One must simply "power up" Kenshiro by wiping the floor with as many enemies as possible -- when his power bar gets full, he will tear off his shirt (for some reason) and gain better attacks and enhanced strength.

If one bothers to actually play the game for a bit, there's all sorts of fun secrets! If you head back up to the top of the first map after completing the first puzzle level, you can get enhanced defense by speaking to a young woman.

Listen... at first glance, the game seems stupid, I'll admit that. However, if you give it a shot, and you play around for a while, you'll find there's a ton of hilarious and epically awesome things to be found. There's even one boss who looks like Freddie Mercury (from Queen), and another boss who is a dead ringer for Hulk Hogan!

I have beaten this game, several times, and it's awesome! You just need to continue to play around and learn the little secrets.

The one downside with the game is the lack of a save feature. You must restart every time you turn on the sega! Youch. HOWEVER! Once you reach a new act, if you die, just hold A+B+C and press start on the main title screen and you can start your new game from act 2, 3, or 4! Pretty handy.

All in all, "Last Battle" has been a LOT of fun! You just need to play it for more than five minutes before you toss it aside.

1.0 out of 5 stars Real Bad, January 7, 2004
This review is from: Last Battle (Video Game)
This video game was based on the highly popular Manga movie Fist of the North Star. Bizarre then when you consider how terrible it is. I've no idea why they didn't just call it Fist of the North Star instead of Last Battle. Perhaps they wanted to fool people into believing they were buying Final Fight (a much better game). Tho that's still not a good enough reason for this to be so terrible.

It was a side-scrolling beat-em-up (one of my fave genres on the Genesis) but the character you played took up 90% of the screen height and walked like he had something stuck up you know where. And you didn't exactly 'beat' people up either. They just flew off the screen the second you touched them. All rather unspectacularly I must say.

It was impossible to get past level three. The end of level boss was just too hard. (Level two boss was a short green fat guy that you touch once and he cracked like an egg !?)

And the music? Don't get me started on the music. It was surely the most laughable aspect of the game. I still know it off by heart. Hard really to forget it considering it was only one 'cue' played over and over. Did I really play the game that much?

Sega could have made this very cool but it was a very quickly made and very cheap cash-in on a cult anime movie. And if you care (and if you still have a genesis with this game) press ABC and START on the title screen for a level select cheat (only the levels you have already completed tho). They couldn't even make the cheats cool!
