Book Description

Bible & Postcolonialism May 2001
Forays from a colonized continent, casting a sharp eye over globalization, exploitation, exodus, exile, home, identity, essentialism, translation and opposition criticism, all with copious reference to postcolonial theory. Why has the Bible been an absent partner in postcolonial criticism? What might be the reason for such myopia? Roland Boer seeks a presence for the Bible in postcolonial criticism through a series of forays, casting a sharp eye over questions such as globalization, exploitation, exodus, exile, home, identity, essentialism, translation and opposition. The book covers theoretical literature on postcolonialism, the Bible, explorer journals, hybrid fiction and indigenous language, all with a focus on Australia. It closes by reflecting on the strange dialectic whereby the Bible itself has a distinct role in the production of postcolonialism.

More About the Author

Apart from journeys by ship, train and riding my bicycle as far and as often as I can, I like to write. Mostly academic writing, on religion, politics, Bible, theology, socialism - but also on popular culture such as pornography, sex workers, film and music. I also write travel stories, with a regular column in Arena Magazine, as well as some political odds and ends.

In my spare time I try to keep my blog, Stalin's Moustache (stalinsmoustache.wordpress.com) up to date.

Well, if this is what passes for postcolonial criticism "down under" then it's a good thing at least we'll always have New Zealand.

Not only does Dr Boer seem incapable of mastering even the most basic dialectic schema, but he insists upon subjecting us to his photography.

Is he even a real MarXXXist. Was he ever?

In spite of - or, perhaps, becasue of his countless scholastic slips and revisionist inklings - Roland Boer remains the only man capable of dragging biblical studies out of the 19th century and into the retro-futuristic age of joyless humanism we all thought died with Della Volpe. More please!
