I have come in search of The Last Bit Bear because of my college experience. I have found that since I have been in college very few people have been strong enough to be an individual. The Last Bit Bear is the story of a bear who is the last of his kind, an individual by default. It is a story of how he searches for other Bit bears but in the end finds that he is the last bit bear; he finds his Self. This book will encourage children to be individuals and go in search of their Self, adults as well. I love all children's books but this one in particular because of the powerful message it sends in the classic form of a fable. I applaude the author.

My 3.5 yr old son HATES this book. It was a gift, and I didn't look at it before someone else read it to him. I asked him if he wanted to read it a couple of days later. "No, it scares me. Its a scary book." I put it back on the shelf and forgot about it for a couple months.

When I did pick it back up and began reading it... What a piece of propaganda. Humans BAD. Animals GOOD. Humans so BAD this invented bear never finds a mate. The prose isn't really that great, unless you're really down with the message. "Childrens' environmental literature"--- good grief, run a mile. I'm not suprised Nestle picked up the author-- she does write a viewpoint well.

Don't get me wrong. We need to be careful with our use of the world and clean up after ourselves. But please, we can do all this without scaring the preschoolers.

Those who proudly view humanity as intrinsically bad and the rest of creation good will find it appropriate for their children.

I first read this book in a car ride from Yellowstone N.P. (where my parents bought it for me) to our home during a family weekend trip. The story was always a favorite memory and more than 20 years later I tracked it down and bought the book again to read and enjoy. It is no coincidence that I have grown into an adult advocating for sustainable living, consciencious of the envenronment, my social responsibility, and making a living doing so. I recommend this book to any child or adult.
