Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3–Mrs. Hartwells students are worried about how sad shell be and how much shell miss them when school lets out for the summer. They look for the perfect gift to help her remember them and decide to make a poster with a poem and drawings featuring all of the things that theyll miss about school, especially their teacher. Bursting with color, the cartoon illustrations look at the experience from both sides with hilarious results. The characters faces are highly expressive and run the gamut of emotions throughout the book. As the children wrack their brains for the perfect present, a group of teachers can be seen in the distance planning their vacations with great excitement. A story with both child and teacher appeal.–Genevieve Gallagher, Murray Elementary School, Charlottesville, VA

From Booklist

K-Gr. 2. For all the fuss about the beginning of school, only a handful of picture books take place at the end. Here, Mrs. Hartwell's class, a tight-knit group, sympathetically imagines how much their teacher will miss them over the summer: "While we're swimming, she'll be reading her old lesson plans." They decide to do what they can to cheer Mrs. Hartwell, soon to be devastated by their absence. There's an undertone of irony here, which adults may pick up sooner than children. Despite the mournful, last-day-of-school scene the children imagine (when the final school bus pulls away, a crew of bereft and bawling teachers remains on the steps), the book's last in-school scene shows a conga line of happy teachers bouncing down the hallway. The comic exaggeration in the vivid, colorful illustration makes this a lively choice for sharing with school groups, and the wordless illustrations on the last page show what Mrs. Hartwell really does over the summer. I read this story to my 2nd grade class and they loved it. I also have "First Day Jitters", they related the two stories and loved the connection. This is a must have for the classroom library.

I purchased 2 of these books based on some of the positive reviews. I was hoping to give them to my children's teachers as part of their end of the year gift. I am a former teacher and illustrator, so I am admittedly very picky... Maybe TOO picky! The book is fine, but nothing spectacular. I think I will still have the students in the class sign it and give it to their teachers. But I prefer my usual standbys: Mrs. Spitzer's Garden or It's a Fine, Fine School. Write a note inside, have your child write a note or draw a picture, and paste a photo in it. The teacher will love it! :)

This one is grand for those last days of school. Kids find it hilarious when they notice the teachers REAL reactions to those last day blues!

I've read Julie Danneberg's "First Day Jitters" to my second graders on each first day and they loved it!. When I saw that Julie Danneberg had a "Last Day Blues" I was so excited! I bought it for my class this year. I think it is adorable! It really touches on the feelings students and teachers have at the end of the year in a light hearted way. Though I haven't read it to my students yet (I'm waiting for the end of the year), I know they will like it.

I bought this book for my son's 2nd grade teachers as an end of the year gift. The class made their own poem about their memories of the year (based on the poem in the book) and we put it on a poster board. They also signed their names inside the book cover. I hope it will be a nice memory for his teachers and the students.
It's a cute book and I think teachers will appreciate the underlying humorous message!

I read "First Day Jitters" during the first week of school, so my 3rd grade students were familiar with the characters. This was a very sweet book and my students and I enjoyed it very much. It was fun to compare the perspectives of the student and teacher views of how teachers face the last days of school.

On the first day of school I read my students First Day Jitters. This book is from the same author and I read it to them on the last day of school. It strikes up good conversations between to kids to see what they can remember from the first book. So glad I bought this!
