5.0 out of 5 stars The Last Boy
I found this book to be wonderfully written. It held my attetion through to the end. Being from around the area where this book is written was wonderful. 3.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Read
An interesting, well-written story which ultimately degenerated into a tiresome tree-hugger plea worthy of Al Gore. Some of the dialogue reflects Delancey Street more than Ithaca, NY.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, April 5, 2004

I loved this book. I have little to no appreciation for the mystical but was captivated by the characters and plot. Disregard the other reviews. This book was wonderful. If you like well-written, original, unique books, this is for you. I read it in 3 days and in the months since completing it, I still think about the characters and the references to nature.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Last Boy - A Thought Provoking Book, April 15, 2002

After reading and thinking about this book, it seems to be two stories in one. I picked it up not knowing what to expect, and read it in just a couple of sittings. It truly is a page turner, and not at all what I expected. I enjoyed it a lot - my only criticism is that the end is just a little too pat.
However, I recommend it highly, and am looking forward to more reviews of it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ambitious ideas, but..., December 9, 2002
This review is from: The Last Boy (Hardcover)
While "The Lost Boy" brings up many ambitious ideas about the poor state of the earth's ecology, and sounds the doomsday horn about it, the story itself seems a bit too glossed over.

Robert Lieberman takes on the task of telling Molly and Danny Driscoll's tale, a woman and her five-year-old son. When Danny mysteriously goes missing from his daycare centre one day, this sets the plot into motion. But it's no ordinary "missing child" case. As the author hints at things to come by building up the tension admirably, there are too many unbelievable reactions by the various characters to make this a better novel. The eco-disaster motif is refreshing, especially the underlying message included in the story...but it doesn't really seem to play out in a way that holds ones interest until the end. I kept thinking of "The Celestine Prophecy", only with an end-of-the-world message while reading this. While it was engaging enough, it wasn't a page-turner by any means.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps you'll find the meaning of life in this book!, June 15, 2002

I started reading page one at 5pm and just finished page 502 at 12:30, that's how good it was. The Last Boy by Robert H Lieberman is an incredible read.

Without giving the plot away (basically all this is on the jacket) a 4 year old boy disappears. His mother searches frantically and forms an alliance with a local cop. Seven months go by, then all the sudden he just comes walking back home. But he is completely changed, matured beyond his years, and has a message for the world. His whereabouts and what he did for the last 7 months are a complete mystery.

Anything else would give away the plot, but let me tell you, it is an incredible book. The answer to the meaning of life is suggested. Don't go by the back of the book, it's not really apocalyptic and ancient texts do not play as major a part as they claim.

It doesn't fit into any all inclusive genre, there are elements of suspense, mystery, science fiction, romance, and spirituality (not religious, just an overall spiritualness to it that can be embraced by any religion). It's just an excellent, thought provoking read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Last Boy, February 28, 2002

This book just grabbed me almost from the first page. Many years ago I had read Lieberman's "Baby" (and I still have a copy!) and was thoroughly captivated. I don't know exactly what it is, but both books just pulled me along non-stop. This one even more than the last.

This book begins with every parent's worst nightmare and from the moment that Molly's child disappears I was just riveted. The twists and turns in this novel are wholly unexpected and the hopeful ending really surprised me.

It's so hard finding good books these day. So I can't recommend Last Boy enough! A really great read. And it's intelligent, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a page turner!, February 27, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Last Boy (Hardcover)
I was given a copy of this book as a gift, and I started it one evening, only to find myself still immersed in it at 3:00 am! The story is compelling, the characters are real -- the book leaves you with an awful lot to think about, and hope for. I can't wait to see more from this author!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Got It All, March 30, 2005
This review is from: The Last Boy (Paperback)
Loved this book! Could NOT put it down. It's got it all - Romance, Suspense and a Great Message - all woven into a wonderful story. If you are a mother then you have got to read this book and then ask yourself, "What would I have done in the same situation?" I love a book that makes you think and is not just mindless reading - this book does that, but at the same time is an easy read. A great book club book!
