Book Description

August 21, 2007
While out on a midnight drive, two friends - Alec and Sam - are hit by the "Ghost Train," an inter-dimensional soul carrier. They wake up to discover themselves stuck on the train with no way out and no ticket, which is a problem when the conductor comes around. As they desperately search for an escape, the boys uncover clues that lead them deeper into the train's musty cabins and into the path of a killer!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Lolos's art is the most striking thing about this book. Not unlike artists Paul Pope and Becky Cloonan, Lolos combines American, European and Japanese influences to create something very modern, and uses expressive dark lines to deepen the gaunt faces of the characters. The book starts with teenagers Sam and Alec riding around at night in a car stolen from a parent and listening to heavy metal. They are striking, with their squat bodies and big grinning mouths, but they soon prove to be the most normal characters in the book. Early on, the boys find themselves aboard a train filled with surreal creatures, showing how Lolos apparently loves drawing characters with various extended limbs and layers of bulk. The parade of oddities is intriguing, but it soon feels like a distraction. Sam and Alec are separated, but before that complication is investigated, more supporting cast members need to strut their stuff. Thankfully, by the second half of the book a story starts to unfold, and the script catches up to become as absorbing as the art. This pays off with a cliffhanger ending that blindsides the readers and leaves them curious for more. (Sept.)

From the Publisher

Johnny Bacardi Show:

"He gets the mood across very well as things get more and more surreal for our hapless pair. Another strong Oni publication; hope I get to read the next book in the series."

Ain't It Cool News:

"This book is fast paced and Lolos has a firm grasp on how to convey tension and fear with little or no words, relying on skewed panel angles and the looks on his characters stylized faces to convey the message. Lolos is a Greek artist. His work has a non-American/non-manga style to it that is a welcome change from the norm. The characters and panels are fluid and the even-set structure of the page (common with a lot of American and manga comics) is discarded in favor of more creative ways to tell the story. Start to finish, this is one solid read."

Comic Pants:

"It's a story that takes hold of you from the first word that is uttered on the page and sends you charging headfirst into what can only be described as a delectable and visceral entertainment."

"It's a story that starts off with a bang and never lets up."

"Sam and Alec. These two characters, cocky and sarcastic as they are, are entirely believable and could almost be those darn kids that live next door to you who curse and play their music entirely too loud in the middle of the night."

"The style that Lolos has created is so original and so visually amazing that the characters, no matter what is happening on the page... he tells the story with such tenacity, so perfectly, and with such an ease that it is a simply stunning thing to see."

"The Last Call rocks in every sense of the word."

"It's an off-beat gem, one that surprises, makes you laugh and really just gets under your skin in every good way possible."

4.0 out of 5 stars Good start to the series, September 3, 2007
By
This review is from: Last Call, Volume 1 (v. 1) (Paperback)
This is a good start to the series, but I thought it was kind of a slight read. I really enjoyed the art though, it's pretty cartoony, but very inky and dark as well. The artist did a great job getting across the panic of the main characters, as well as the general weirdness of the situation they find themselves in. The art is such a plus that I didn't really mind that the story took quite a while to unfold.

I'm looking forward to volume two...

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait to see more!, October 14, 2007
This review is from: Last Call, Volume 1 (v. 1) (Paperback)
I am a huge fan of the Pirates of Coney Island, and espcecially Vasilis Lolos' gritty style of art. It adds to the wildness of most of his characters in Pirates and in the Last Call, and also makes for a very surreal backdrop for the story. The whole thing rather reminds me of a cross between Spirited Away and the Nightmare Before Christmas. Has sort of a mysterious air that leaves you unsure whether the events that happen to the characters will be fantastic or threatening.

The story is a little slow at first, and kind of confusing, but I like the fact that you don't really know what's going on or what to make of some of the supporting cast. The cliff-hanger ending is really great too!
I know this book just came out, but I already want to read another volume!
