Good start to the series,
By Clayton Hollifield (Battle Ground, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Last Call, Volume 1 (v. 1) (Paperback)
This is a good start to the series, but I thought it was kind of a slight read. I really enjoyed the art though, it's pretty cartoony, but very inky and dark as well. The artist did a great job getting across the panic of the main characters, as well as the general weirdness of the situation they find themselves in. The art is such a plus that I didn't really mind that the story took quite a while to unfold.
I'm looking forward to volume two...

Can't wait to see more!,
This review is from: Last Call, Volume 1 (v. 1) (Paperback)
I am a huge fan of the Pirates of Coney Island, and espcecially Vasilis Lolos' gritty style of art. It adds to the wildness of most of his characters in Pirates and in the Last Call, and also makes for a very surreal backdrop for the story. The whole thing rather reminds me of a cross between Spirited Away and the Nightmare Before Christmas. Has sort of a mysterious air that leaves you unsure whether the events that happen to the characters will be fantastic or threatening.
The story is a little slow at first, and kind of confusing, but I like the fact that you don't really know what's going on or what to make of some of the supporting cast. The cliff-hanger ending is really great too! I know this book just came out, but I already want to read another volume! |
