"People whose lives are changed by alcohol and addiction have a special knowledge of the world's unsafety and unpredictability. They become intimate with chaos and shame, know well the consequences and limits of human control. Ordinary language may be inadequate to depict the intensities of their longing, grief, and desire for life. The poems in this anthology, edited by Sarabande Books' co-founders, Gorham and Skinner, rightly feel hard won-as if the language had been hauled, chiseled, sieved, and saved to let the voice contain, express, and transform difficult experience. Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Last Call is a deeply moving collection of poems not only about the addictive personality, but about the families and friends who inevitably become a part of the suffering. Represented are favorite contemporary authors such as Raymond Carver, Tess Gallagher, Denis Johnson, and Etheridge Knight, and several new voices. I was stunned by both the bluntness and the forgiveness inherent in many of the poems--a terrific selection of both familiar and emerging voices.

Review

"Last Call demonstrates that alcoholism (and other forms of drug addiction) matter greatly, not just socially, but also artistically; as many critics have stressed, alcohol abuse and literary production are strongly, and, in the last analysis, destructively linked in the American imagination, from Poe to Kerouac to Jim Carroll. . . . Since I received my copy of Last Call, I have tirelessly recommended it to friends and to people for whom I conduct retreats." -- Dionysos: Journal of Literature and Addiction

"Last Call is a slim volume which, given its brevity, achieves a remarkable range. Its concision has other advantages: it allows the book to be read in one sitting, absorbed, if the reader wishes, at once-giving 'manageable dimensions' to that heartbreaking world. By uniting such disparate writers through a common concern, the editors remind us that, different as our lives may be, alcoholism, addiction, and recovery are issues which touch us all." -- Rain Taxi

The poems possess an unusual authority, making room for that undefined darkness, the between, from which meaning sometimes arises." -- Poetry Calendar , New York, New York

"Seventeen poets gather forces to present personal and poignant perspectives about abuse, addiction, and, occasionally, recovery. . . . Last Call is not so much instructive as it is cause for reflection, concern, and, most importantly, acknowledgment of the extent of the problem in contemporary society." -- Small Press Review

"The poets whose work is collected in Last Call: Poems on Alcoholism, Addiction, and Deliverance have all tried, in one way or another, to strip away the lies and get at the truth at the heart of alcoholism and drug addiction. They've employed anger and cold objectivity, compassion and bitterness, irony and humor. . . . [T]he terrible pity in these poems, and in the failed relationships they describe [is that] even the worst drunk, the most hopeless addict, is a human being, someone capable, however infrequently, of sudden acts of kindness. It would be so much simpler if they-or we-were monsters. . . . This is a book that should speak powerfully and clearly to just about anyone who has been touched by alcoholism-which is just about everyone, as best I can tell. And if you're one of the lucky few whose life and family have been immune to this curse, you may still find much to admire in Last Call, simply because it contains a lot of very good poetry." -- The Courier Journal

5.0 out of 5 stars Brings the poet's eye and ear to the mystery of addiction., February 28, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Last Call: Poems on Alcoholism, Addiction, & Deliv (Paperback)
This book brings the poet's eye and ear to the misery and redemption that is alcoholism. These are good poems, first, well written, and wonderful to read in their diversity and power. That they confront a topic which frightens so many people is remarkable. That they bring to the topic fresh, sometimes startling points of view is a cause for celebration. "Last Call: Poems on Alcoholism, Addiction, and Deliverance" will interest recovering individuals, their friends and families, addiction treatment professionals, and anyone, in recovery or not, who loves good writing and is willing to be open to an honest look at America's favorite disease
