Book Description

October 7, 2001
When FBI agent, Drew Greer, arrives in Hilton Head, S.C., Attorney General Kate Guesswine must face the horrifying news that she and sister, Courtney St. James, the well-known late night talk-show guru of the occult and the mysterious, may be the intended victims of a killer. Kate also must deal with the persistent affection of her Ex., Detective Justin McCreary, and the demoniacal behavior of her father, Dr. Clifton Guesswine, while she struggles to regain control of her relationship with English professor, David Smithe. Scenic Hilton Head Island and Beaufort S.C., the Gullah culture, Kate’s motorhome and a charming hand built cottage are fresh ingredients for a menu of murder, romance, deception and intrigue.

From The Last Coffin: “Asleep, the brain bypasses sounds that are familiar, the house settling, furnaces and refrigerators going on and off. But then like a giant Cyclops standing guard over the night, its eye peering into corners and cracks and crevices, the brain shakes your shoulders, opens your lids and lets you hear unfamiliar sounds, sounds like pieces of glass hitting the floor, of someone on the first step…”

More About the Author

Hello everyone:

I'm a retired teacher who taught Writer's Workshop for 29 years. For many years I wrote articles and poetry, some of which were published. I wrote The Last Coffin, while staying in an old, 32' motorhome on a lot that I purchased on Hilton Head Island, SC. That book deals with a serial killer, and in the early morning hours while I was writing and I took my dachshund out to the bathroom, it was totally dark--except for mushroom lights at the end of each pad--so I shook because there I was, writing a murder mystery, in a park with no one around, imagining that I might get mugged or worse...

My second book, Ghost Rain required a lot of research, as it deals with the harvesting of body parts. I was again at Hilton Head in my old rust bucket; it rained a lot that year. I dragged my visiting cousin down remote lanes on Lady's Island near Beaufort, parked on side roads in mud late at night to 'feel' the atmosphere of my novel and wrote feverishly way into the early morning hours. I interviewed a lot of people for that book; Nancy Vann, a real psychic, gave me insight into a main character. Ah...writing can be hazardous but very rewarding!

Teaching was a terrific career for me. Writing is a passion that overwhelms me. My children's novel, The Adventures of Charlie Keeper, was a virtual trip into the computer. I read dozens of books to prepare for that book and participated in a paint ball game in which I was almost instantly eliminated. I believe that Charlie's adventures are adventures that we all wish we could have-six to eighty! He learns the most magnificent virtues while saving kids: The Braggarts, The Do-Nothings, etc.

My fourth novel, Sleeping with the Corpse is almost finished. Kate Guesswine is at it again--caught up in a mystery involving the art world.

Kate Guesswine has a philosophy of life: be kind, be passionate in all that you do, try to do something nice for someone each day. Like all of us, she stumbles now and then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spine tingler, August 13, 2003

You'll be looking over your shoulder if you read this chiller. It has it all...suspense, romance, and culture. Duckro's style of writing is lyrical and will help you see the vivid details of the low country of South Carolina, a tomb and an old mansion. You'll find out why I said this was a spine tingler when you come face to face with the serial killer who confronts the Guesswine family.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Last Coffin, December 24, 2002
This review is from: The Last Coffin (Paperback)
Looking for a strong willed, intelligent heroine? Then look no father than Kate Guesswine, South Carolina Attorney
General. It appears that Kate and her sister Courtney have become the target of a serial killer. Is the killer targeting Kate
because she tried a case of his or could it be that Courtney has became his object of desire as Courtney is a well known
late night talk show radio host?

All this takes place in the South Carolina in an area centering on Hilton Head and Beaufort, South Carolina. While
dealing with these attacks Kate must also deal with an amorous ex-husband who is also a police detective, a boyfriend
who is acting a little flaky and her father, a famous doctor who appears to have become more than a little psychotic.

Intermeshed within the stories is glimpses of Kate and Courtney's unusual childhood and a lot of bits and pieces
about the Gullah culture that still thrives in parts of South Carolina. Gullah being a combination of Creole French and
African languages that evolved when the slaves were brought to America.

I loved having a strong female lead that did not tuck her tail and run at the first sign of trouble. Sure she was scared
and unsure but she was determined to tough it out but Kate also knew when to play it safe. She did not appear to
knowingly walk into trouble like so many of today's heroines do.

I look forward to more books by Ms Duckro and especially books featuring Kate Guesswine. Review by: Susan Johnson

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic mystery!!, April 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Last Coffin (Paperback)
What a family, the Guesswines. Once I started reading I could not stop. An unexpected twist in the ending keeps you guessing to the very end. I recommend this book for anyone who likes a great mystery. If you like Patricia Cornwell you will love Rebecca Duckro. I can't wait to see what happens to the Guesswines in the next book.
