A wonderful , humorous look at a disintegrating family, June 3, 2005
I approached this novel not knowing the author or anything about
this work. What a pleasant surprise this turned out to be.
The novel is about the disintegration of a Saskatchewan family,
descendents of a farm family, trying to cope with life in the
modern age. The author uses several simultaneous stories to
tell this and it all comes together wonderfully in the end.
But it isn't until the very end that you understand how he
will do this. The story is fascinating, told with humour and
great warmth and having never been to Saskatchewan or read
anything about it, I found the details on this province to
be fascinating. If the idea of a western novel turns you off
don't worry, this isn't really about cowobys, although there
is an ironic take on the Hollywood theme. But if you want to
read a wonderful novel about modern families and life today
this is the perfect book. I look forward to reading more works
by this very gifted writer. The prose was clear and very strong
throughout the book. A great read.
