Grand ole Country,

I urge you to pay close attention to the lyrics on this album - they are available on Shane's website if you want to check them out prior to buying - before jumping to conclusions about the songs. They are exceptionally good. I particularly like Just Married, where the word 'just' changes its meaning halfway through. There's a similarly keen edge to the words of Princess and Happy Hour.
The sound is an echo of a Nashville of a previous generation. Some reviewers have likened it to the Country music of the late 70s, but really it is older than that -- Rock-infused rather than the crossover Pop-blended styles of the late 70s and early 80s. This may put some listeners off, as being a mere throwback. But, as I say, it's the lyrics that redeem these songs. There's an insight and a sharpness to them which make this album stand out and be a worthy addition to any Country or Americana collection. [PeterReeve]

Shane Wyatt is a delight. His music is very catching, almost haunting... The Last Cowboy itself is a great bullet... Buy this! I consider it to be great travelling music... put it in your truck and DRIVE! I love to drive singing songs like these. Shane Wyatt has great appeal and a very well-trained voice. I predict a hit.

If you like Toby Keith's voice but can do without the jingoistic bluster, Shane Wyatt's Last Cowboy may be more up your alley. Wyatt's baritone combined with the albums polished production make for pleasing mainstream country music. The Last Cowboy doesn't step outside the lines of traditional country music but plays confidently within its boundaries.

Wow, rarely do I get excited about a new country album. I had heard good things about this one, so went for it. And, am realy impressed! As others have mentioned, the lyrics are thoughful, unique, and personalized. For me, the most enjoyable was the sheer variety of musicality across the tracks. Not 11 versions of the same old sound, but truly 11 life stories put to music.

Pleasing debut album,

Shane Wyatt's debut CD, THE LAST COWBOY, is a collection of 11 songs -- all of them self written. Each tune held a standard country sound and I found myself more than once going back and relistening to key phrases in the songs so as to learn the words. The music was upbeat on some tunes, slower on others. In my opinion, Mr. Wyatt's talent lies in catchy, fast tunes more so than ballads. His voice is wicked deep and while I would love nothing more than to be serenaded by a handsome cowboy with a beard and goatee, Shane's ability to sing and carry toe tapping tunes was easily apparant. I tapped my fingers on my armrest of my car and much to the dismay of the cars around me, opened my windows and pumped up the volume.
As far as debuts go, THE LAST COWBOY was enjoyable for me to listen to. I think Shane Wyatt has tremendous talent; he just might need to hone it a bit more so as to add more polish. I would love nothing more than for a radio station to pick him up and start playing his songs. I would definately purchase anything else he releases. *Natalie S. for Amazon Vine*

There are others who are better qualified to judge Mr. Wyatt's musical abilities (I simply found the music enjoyable); what struck me most is that every single one of the self-penned songs involves clever playing around with words.
In "Waiting For Forever" the title words are meant to be juxtaposed with the more common phrase he never quite utters: "waiting forever". In "The Last Cowboy" one of the lead-ins to the eponymous chorus line is "So he wouldn't have to be...". "Whole Lotta Love" plays around with different uses for the word "love". In "Just Married" the meaning of the title phrase changes throughout the song. In "Fly Away" the title words are used both figuratively and literally. In "Princess" the title is not referring to what you might think. In "Love You Too Much" "holdin' you" is used figuratively when you think he's using it literally. "Happy Hour" uses a different meaning for the title phrase than you are thinking of. "She Could Do Better" means the title phrase quite differently than the one who first uttered it did. "The Big Bad Dog" plays around with gender in asexual objects; the truck is clearly female, but the driver's gender is not mentioned. In addition the lyrics cleverly (and a bit annoyingly IMHO) conceal whether the truck in question is real, a legend, or even a ghost. Oh, the song I didn't mention, "Lord Help Me (Show Her How I Feel)" is the heartfelt prayer of a NON-wordsmith: "I can't find the words to say." I don't know if Shane Wyatt has filled his grandfather's boots as "the last cowboy in Oklahoma", but he's clearly one of the better wordsmiths in Oklahoma.

Shane Wyatt CD The Last Cowboy harkens back to the 'gool ole days of country music. Wyatt has a deep rich voice that is perfect for this style of music.
What you will find on this CD. Wyatt's own music. He reportedly wrote every song on this CD, not relying on others to do the dirty work for him. It shows in the passion that he brings to each and every song. This is not one of those CDs that you will listen to one or two songs and skip the rest. Instead this is a CD you can put in, walk away from and enjoy each and every song. What you won't get in this CD. You won't find that 'new-age' country that is more rock/pop than country. Not saying anything is wrong with that mind you, but if you want that old school country this is the CD you should be looking at. When all is said and done this is a very good CD by a promising new artist. Wyatt is an artist that many country fans should get to know, it's evident he will have a great career.

Great Album By New Country Star!,

Shane Wyatt has accomplished several great feats with this album:
1) He wrote every song on the album. I believe he has also released it under his own label, which is highly respectable. 2) Every song on this ablum is solid. Very rarely can this be said of an album in any genre these days. Normally you get one or two good songs for the singles, but every song here is radio material. Wyatt has a great sound. The guitar licks hit home, the band is tight, the production is tight, and his deep resonating voice is catchy. Songs alternate from slow soulful ballads to fast and fun romps. Some of the best are "Waiting For Forever," a great song about a man's love for a woman; "The Last Cowboy," a young boy looking up to an old man that paints a vivid portrait which reminded me of "Cowboy Bill" by Garth Brooks. It isn't derivitave of Brooks, however, the song has a sound and feel of its own; "Lord Help Me To Show Her How I Feel"; and many other good songs. There is even one about the fabled Black Dog 18 wheeler. I listened to this over and over for two days after I got it. I hope to hear more from Shane Wyatt in the future. I have a feeling we'll be hearing these songs on the radio very soon and for a long time to come.

Promising New County Artist Has Solid Album,

Shane Wyatt deserves a lot of credit for penning and performing all of the songs on his new album. His style is a traditional, throw-back homage to the older country & western singers. Reminiscent of a Merle Haggard, Waylon Jenninngs or Randy Travis, Wyatt's style and sound is truly traditional.
Like Gary Allen, Wyatt performs his own material smoothly and professionally. This traditional cowboy singer will make his mark with this first album.

I hadn't heard Shane before, but I'll be looking for more from him. I agree with some of the other reviewers that Shane does do old school country and he does it very well. All the songs on this album were written by him, and most are very good. I especially liked; The Last Cowboy, Princess, She Could Do Better, and The Big Bad Dog.
While these songs harken back to old Texas?Oklahoma style country music it's very well done well written and easy to listen to. And Shane's deep resonant voice is the icing on the cake. Not the kind of pop country thats been around lately, just a great voice singing good songs. And the songs sound like they were written by a happy man. |
