Editorial Reviews

Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden broaden the scope of their duo project to showcase jazz classics like Thelonious Monk s Round Midnight and Bud Powell s spritely Dance Of The Infidels. Love songs, however, are to the fore in this selection, with tender versions of My Old Flame, My Ship, It Might As Well Be Spring, Everything Happens To Me, and Every Time We Say Goodbye as well as alternate takes of Where Can I Go Without You and Goodbye, every bit as touching as the Jasmine renditions.

When we play together it s like two people singing, said Jarrett of his reunion with Haden. The intentions of the song are honored, the shades of meaning in a melody or a lyric explored instrumentally.

As Charlie Haden put it, Keith really listens, and I listen. That s the secret. It s about listening.

The music of Last Dance was recorded at Keith Jarrett s home studio is is available on CD and vinyl.

In Last Dance there is not surprises Jarrett and Haden play standard again. From Kurt Weil to Monk, to Bud Powell to Cole Porter.. like always they make the standards live again, they change the way to ear this excellent music. In fact This CD is part of the same session of Jasmine recorded on March 2007. Even they introduce same alternate takes of Jasmine; "Where Can I Go Without You" and "Goodbye" . If you love Jasmine (ECM 2165) you will love also this one. Is a encounter between two old friends only to remember greats songs, but like always is a great encounter. I will prefer hear new Jarrett song book but this is ok. I hope that the tittle "Last Dace" and the last song "Goodbye" will not the announce of the last adventure of this two master together, I hope that in the future they play together again.

PS. Unfortunately the 11th of july Haden pass away. This was his last master piece. Gloria to this men and his music. Thanks to be so good,

This recording is deeply beautiful and so sad for me. I am a big fan of both Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden. My music collection contains a total of 81 recordings by both as solo artists. Together, they are the definition of harmonious synchronicity and great affection for each other. The way they complement each other is my true definition of Jazz and plain old beautiful music. I will miss Mr. Haden and the enormous contributions that he made to Jazz and the world of music. "Last Dance" is a real testament to the beauty that he and Mr. Jarrett shared together. In a time when the world is in so much turmoil and everything seems so gray and complex, this recording adds a shimmering slice of beautiful sunlight to an otherwise gloomy day. Thanks ECM for timing this release so perfectly close to when I personally needed to hear it. I shed tears of Joy for Mr. Haden, his family and his circle of love and influence across the globe. He will be deeply missed. I thank God that he passed this way and found a true kindred spirit in Keith Jarrett. This music is beautiful and deserves to be heard by the masses! RIP and Peace!!!

I write this review one day after learning of the death of Charlie Haden. What a way to go out! This is a brilliant recording. They were done at the same time as their 2010 recording "Jasmine",but even the alternate takes of two tracks are different and take my breath away.Keith Jarrett's playing has never been better and Mr. Haden's double bass, while subtle at times, never fails to capture the emotions he is trying to express.Their versions of these standards are nothing if not amazingly beautiful. As Mr.Jarrett said in the liner notes to "Jasmine"four years ago-"Call your wife or husband or lover in late at night and sit down and listen".Buy this recording. You will not be sorry.R.I.P.Charlie.

I largely agree with all the 5-star reviews. Jarrett and Haden play beautifully on this recording, and there is much to appreciate over repeated listenings. Don't be fooled by the sense of ease in their interplay: these gentlemen offer a master class in the creation of musical substance while working from a foundation of subtlety and nuance. It is easy to follow this music; but then, "Wow, how did he think to do that?" These cats can play.

My 4-stars reflect the recording itself. Made in Jarrett's own space, it is very dry and neither the piano nor bass fully bloom. I miss the full resonance of Haden's bass. The decay of Jarrett's piano seems abbreviated, swallowed too soon by the room. I wonder what a larger studio might have added? Or, even a stone-walled chapel? In the booklet that accompanied Jasmine (the session at which these songs were also recorded), Jarrett noted that the sound is dry. It was an aesthetic decision related to the clarity and intimacy he sought. For his purpose, he chose very well and my second-guessing may be impertinent.

Another brilliant musical offering from two masters. Although Keith's piano does not have some of the ambience and resonance heard on previous ECM recordings, his playing throughout is superlative as usual. Charlie's bass has the warmth and depth always associated with his sound and his playing is equally great. Two distinctive voices coming together to create yet another sound portrait of beauty. Wonder if Keith has any more tracks or outtakes from these sessions. I'd love to hear volume 3 of Jarrett/ Haden. Charlie Haden has left behind a lasting legacy of music for generations to enjoy. R.I.P.

I started playing this in the evenings a few weeks before Mr. Haden left us, hoping the title and the last three cuts weren't too much of an omen. Unfortunately, this duo gem now serves as a melancholy tribute to Charlie Haden's minimalist brilliance, along with his seemingly telepathic rapport with Kieth Jarrett. Every time I hear it I still hear something new, which is fortunate, because this, along with any other posthumous releases of Mr. Haden's work, is it. What a magnificent, quiet giant this bassist was.
