This review is from: The last day (Paperback)
This book is a lucid account of the horror of (any) war. Pilger has the knack of letting us understand what people feel and do when everybody is overwhelmed with fear and everything is going to the dogs.Several inserts recount big and small crimes, some horrifying. "The darts entered Thi An's sister, Binh, and continued to move around in her body for several days, causing internal injuries from which she eventually died in agony. The darts were made from a plastic which cannot be detected by X-ray" (p. 42). Plenty of photographs help us grasp Pilger's words. This book should be required reading in high schools---and on the Hill. |
