For layman and classicist alike,

This version pales in comparison to earlier film versions based on the Bulwer Lytton classic. It belongs next to HBO's ROME and Fellini's Satyricon in one's DVD case. The characters, although they appear to represent stock types in Pompeian society, are portrayed with wonderful individualism, so too are the restorative sets of architecture, art and dress styles. The depiction of Isidic and Christian cults within that society is interestingly and graphically portrayed, as well as the chaotic surge of the fleeing mob on that fateful August day.
If one is able to forgive the minor inconsistencies in as far as socio-economic conditions and archaeological realities go, this movie series makes an enjoyable watch. Jansen Standt
