Mr. Scarface is back... but for how long,
By J. Highsmith (Mitchellville, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Last of a Dying Breed (Audio CD)
Ladies and gentlemen, the Geto Boys' finest, Mr. Scarface is back to bless us with his 6th solo offering. Scarface has always given us the 5th Ward's finest of hits: "Scarface", "Now I Feel Ya", "I Seen A Man Die", "Money N The Power" & "Hand Of The Dead Body" w/Ice Cube to name a few. "The Last Of A Dying Breed" has Brad Jordan getting a few things off his chest and leaving his fans with what might be his last CD. Scarface is now the president of the newly formed Def Jam South and is trying to concentrate on more things than just his music. "The Last Of A Dying Breed" gets off to a good start with the title track. Scarface always takes advantage of the time he has in a song to let his fans know what's on his mind. The first single, "It Ain't Part 2" produced by Erick Sermon is also a reminiscent of old Scarface funk jams of the past like "Let Me Roll". One thing that is different on this CD is the guest appearances. With the exception of "My Homies", Scarface has always kept the guest appearances on his CD to a minimum. On this CD you get a little taste of everthing. One of my favorite songs is the collaboration that Scarface does with UGK, "They Down With Us". The song takes the beat from Boogie Down Productions' "I'm Still #1" and makes it a freestyle Southern style. Other gems are "And Yo" w/Redman & The Outlaws, "Conspiracy Theory", "O.G. To Me" w/Jayo Felony, Kurupt & Daz, "Watch Ya Step" and "Look Me In My Eyes". Any Scarface fan would want to get this CD, who knows this could actually be his last OR he could pull a Too Short on us. Stay tuned.

Another solid album from a Rap Legend - 4.5 stars,

Back again for the legend 2 and a half years after his worst "solo" effort, "My Homies" he brings you his 6th solo album. This is not his best album but still very strong & better than 85% of the rap albums out today. It's probably my 3rd or 4th favorite of hi sfirst 8 solo albums. When Face drops an album there is always one certainty, it'll be a very good album or a classic, this one is very good. His lyrics are as usual Great and deep. The production is good as with all his albums, done by Mr. Lee, Face himself, Mike Dean & N.O. Joe. It has no songs I skip, 2 that are ok, 2 classics, and 9 good or great songs. Has a little more guests then he usually does but they do a good job. A must have rap album.

cash money & No limit need to copy off this,

Let me clear somethin up from the beginning: i do not like South hip hop. I do not like Cash Money. I Do not like No Limit. But this cd right here is somethin different.Look at the cd cover. No diamonds, no wine glasses, no limousines, no hummers. Plain text with a picture of a baby inside of a mothers stomach. A hot album is born. From start to finish, this is one of my favorite albums. "Last Of A Dying Breed" starts things off well. "Down With Us" featurin UGK is jus as ill as the original. The rest of the cd packs more heat. Cuttin all the crap this is one of the best cds from the south. Everyone should own this gem from the former Geto Boys member.

Welcome Back, Face!,

I have to be one of Face's No.#1 fans. Growing up in H-town for 23 of my 32 years, I've been a loyal supporter since the very beginning. I own and love every Geto Boys/Scarface CD. On "Dying Breed" I must admit I'm a bit disappointed with the CD as a whole. With the long layoff I was expecting Super Tight, instead I got Pretty Good! In 2000, you have to really bring your best efforts in hip-hop, no more fillers on a CD, and that's my biggest critisism for "Dying Breed"; Half is great and half tends to be OK (production wise and lyrically), what happened to those gangsta beats and gangsta stories of the past? Maybe, this getto boy has gotten spoiled with instant classics CDs coming from the likes of Outkast, Jay-z, Dr.Dre, DMX; No fillers allowed. The bar has been raised in hip-hop, and Scarface's new joint can't touch his previous CD "Untouchable". The songs "IT Aint" and "Down With Us",the joint with UGK,are the only noteables. The joints with Redman,Daz/Kurupt don't work on any level. And the Jay-z joint along with the remainder of the CD is very average.

Over Hyped,

No doubt that many Face fans will be immediately turned off by my low rating of this album, but hear me out on this. I love the music Scarface makes, and he is a very talented artist, all the more reason i was disappointed when i heard this CD. I only recently got into Scarface, like within the last couple of years, and since then, have steadily been accumulating his catalog. I have to say, out of the ones I have so far this one is by far his weakest one.
From what I've seen of him, Scarface is always good for some good, potent lyrical content. The man is definitely a few cuts above your average southern rapper, and thats why I like him. This album is no exception to that lyrical potency. In fact that there is probably the biggest reason I didnt give this album 2 stars. My biggest beef with the album easily stems from the beat selection. Now on all the other CD's I have from Face, his beat selection was on point 90% of the time. He usually has a nice assortment of beats, ranging from soulful to hardcore, to love song and everything in between. I'm just like most lovers of music, the first thing i listen for when determining a song's likability is the music. If the music doesn't grab my attention, then there is less of a chance that I will be as receptive to the lyrics that follow. Last Of A Dying Breed lacks that crucial thing that makes an album good. The beats were easily forgettable and ultimately unsatisfying to hear. I see Face having what i call the "Canibus complex" on this album, where he brings his usual A-game lyrically, but the poor beat selection brings down whatever potential greatness it could have had that other albums have seen in the past and even now in the present. If i ruled the world, i would ask Face to consider redoing the album with a whole new selection of music and re-release this thing, cuz i love the songs, but they would be far more enjoyable to me in accapella. The few songs I did enjoy in their entirety were "In My Time" "And Yo" "Get Out", "Watch Your Step" and "In and Out".

Scarface grows as an artist year by year. He isn't talking about a lot of the stuff he did ten years ago because he isn't living that life anymore. But as far as the current material he gets an A+ in every field to judge an album.

After I started to bumb The Last of a Dying Breed, I was already into the CD. The beats are off the hook. This is a must buy album and if you don't have it, you should get it. My favorite tracks are the single "It Ain't (Part II), "O.G. to me" featuring Jayo, Daz, and Kurupt, and "Get Out" with Jay-Z.
