If you have ever sought to truly understand what life is like for many of the children born and raised in the drug infested hoods across this country, Last of a Dying Breed takes you there with stark realities and ugly truths. It does not glorify the game, nor does it deny the ugly realities, it simply tells you one man's truth. I know because this was my hood also. As I read this book and relived some of the same scenarios, I laughed, I cried, I cringed but most of all I prayed for the central character, Omar Grey. The deck was stacked against him yet, he played the hand that was dealt him with intelligence, tenacity and a sense of loyalty almost non-existent in todays streets. Omar Grey, is unlike anyone you may ever have known. His intrinsic will to survive and unwavering loyalties against all odds truly personifies that he is amongst The Last Of A Dying Breed. Once I began reading this book, I absolutely could not put it down.

I choose this rating because I generally enjoyed the book. However I felt empathetic towards Omar because he had no childhood...like so many black men living in impoverished conditions. He was definitely a mastermind who wasted his brain on establishing a career dealing drugs. I was appalled at how he was treated by the police and sentenced to over 100 years in prison. The justice system punished him for being successful at selling drugs...they do not give the mob as much time for the people they kill and butcher. It is such a hardship for a black man everywhere in the world. He is constantly under the gun. The book took me less than a week to read. It was very upfront and personal involving the drug trade and what happens to people in that lifestyle. It is so easy for people who are not poor to say " He had a choice". However until you live in the ghetto and know how it really is...can you talk about his choices. I would like to see Mr. Pray released and given a chance to further educate himself and contribute to society.

It's a book that everyone should read, very informative. It's very hard reaching out to our youths but this kind of information would give a lot of insight of what's really happening in this world. I hope that even one young person would have the opportunity of buying this book so that they can share info to others. I congratulate the writer and maybe he will continue sharing such greatness.
