5.0 out of 5 stars All bow to Wino, for he is Riff King, "Stoner" Sage...
Children, pick up this double-disc set, and upon listening to its contents you will wonder why you did not pay ten times the amount to own such splendor. Perfect for those late in the game (welcome!), this collection encompasses all their recorded output (two full lengths, an ep and singles-most originally released by Fugazi man Joe Lallys' label Tolotta), which is now...

3.0 out of 5 stars some truly great work from Wino's 2nd greatest band
this release is a compilation that collects songs from the Spirit Caravan's 2 full length albums, their first and last 7" singles, and a couple unreleased tracks. the digital remastering sounds great - lots of clarity and a slight boost in the levels. this 2-CD set in my opinion is proof that Wino is truly one of the greatest post-Hendrix rock guitarists alive today...

Perfect for those late in the game (welcome!), this collection encompasses all their recorded output (two full lengths, an ep and singles-most originally released by Fugazi man Joe Lallys' label Tolotta), which is now out of print. With three unreleased tracks to sweeten the deal, anyone looking for a hearty helping of Sabbath with soul, look no further. This is the real deal-when Scott "Wino" Weinrich is involved, you know you are in for a satisfying trip. Please do yourself a favor and investigate St.Vitus, The Obsessed, Place of Skulls, as well as The Hidden Hand. Thanks Wino-you inspire with your words, as well as with your riffs. Children, take this candle and lead your way out of the darkness...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Near Flawless Chronicle of Greatness, February 18, 2004
This review is from: The Last Embrace (Audio CD)
Wino and all of his musical endeavors, in a short period of time and space, have planted their seeds in my brain and gains more shelf space in my psyche every day. It is safe to assume that my interest level in Spirit Caravan has blossomed into nearly a full blown obsession. Spirit Caravan rises to the top of the "stoner rock" mountain with a mighty grasp on how rock music; in general, is supposed to be played. It is catostrophic to me that Spirit Caravan never achieved the amount of success that lesser bands have been handed for much less effort.

Sans the "Dreamwheel" ep, I do believe that the whole catalog is present and accounted for. Disc 1 features a handful of scattered ep and compilation tracks before careening headfirst into the amazing "Jug Fulla Sun" LP. Disc 2 contains some unreleased tracks followed by the equally praise-worthy "Elusive Truth" LP and most of these songs have gone largely ignored outside of the Caravan's core fanbase.

Heavy, yet well crafted riffs round out the whole of the songs contained therein. The aspect of Spirit Caravan that makes them so unique is their total professional approach to writing music. A good amount of stoner rock bands go for the jugular with unabashed heaviness and Spirit Caravan takes their style ten steps further by incorporating melody, tone, random tempo changes and an all encompassing feeling of despair without falling into the trap that many of rock's elite dive head first into.

If you missed the boat the first time, here's your chance to board the cruise ship. Meteor City gets all the goat horns in their favor for making this collection of superb heavy music available to those who either cannot find Spirit Caravan's individual releases or want to have the lion's share of SC music in one convenient package. Your metal/rock/punk/stoner library is naked without Spirit Caravan to give it some refinement.

Spirit Caravan may not ever achieve the cult status of Saint Vitus or Obsessed, but Wino's level of heart and soul in his playing with S.C. is certainly matched with anything else he's ever done in his career, past or future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Hard and Heady CHUG-SLUDGE Mastery of axe, July 19, 2008
This review is from: The Last Embrace (Audio CD)
Wino and all he touches (excluding his speedy-punk-thrash moments) is truly stellar and well-worth listening. I came up on the great heavies of the 70s like Captain Beyond and Sabbath. Wino's has all that happening with his compositions and axe-work. His voice is PERFECT for the genre and never cheesy Cookie-Monster vox excess. It is Rock, primeval, archaic and primal purity of heavy huge axe with that 70s overdrive, fuzzed out and the bass/axe unison lines are massive like I love. I am a fusion rock head into complexity and angular tech metal like Jarzombeck or Planet X as well as Mahavishnu Orchestra and Allan Holdsworth, (Wino even follows him), but when I need to slow it down and immerse myself in POWER -- Wino's voice, axe, and quirky stoner rock twists are like a warm bath for this guitarist, radio show host & music promoter. Ciao! [...] and JazzRock-Radio com invite you to the madness, madness, mad ne s s

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rocker, August 31, 2006
This review is from: The Last Embrace (Audio CD)
This 2 disk set is an absolute jam from start to finish. Monster riffs, driving bass and drums, passionate vocals, this is not your average doom and gloom. Tempos cover a broad range from slow sludge to very fast uptempo rock. Wino is without a doubt the most unheralded rock guitar hero/god...ever! I seriously doubt Hendrix could have filled 2 cds with the inspired, unrelenting leads Wino has created with Spirit Caravan. My only hope is that future generations discover him the way Clapton and Page found the blues master of yester-year. If you like loud, uncomprimising hard rock that gots soul, you must buy this.

Excellent Spirit Caravan compilation but not really complete as it is missing the 'Dreamwheel' EP. Still, well worth having for Doom/Stoner fans.

Not that it's a huge deal, but every song practically has been cut by an average of 5 seconds, I assume for time constraints for for this medium (CDs, that is). Nevertheless, this is an awesome compilation and practically everything the band had to offer is here, with the exception of the "Dreamwheel" EP. WELL WORTH THE PRICE!!!
