5.0 out of 5 stars Hold onto your seat!, July 4, 2000
I just finished The Last Enemy. Now, I'm going back and start reading it all over again. It's that good--a keeper, an annual read. I was so caught up with the characters, so enmeshed in the plot, that I absolutely dreaded the coming climax. I found myself shaking in anticipation--I was wise to get a head start. As a writer I appreciate the pure talent and sheer hard work it took to create The Last Enemy. I want to write like that when I grow up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great!, December 27, 2000

I have to admit that when I first read this book I didn't like it. I guess I wasn't in the mood for it. But I kept reading everyone's glowing reviews and decided to give it a second try. I was definitely in the mood this time, because I couldn't put it down. I really like Paula Baird Jones' books. The humor, sexual tension, the situations she comes up with... makes for very enjoyable reading. I regret my negative review from before. This time Last Enemy kept me on the edge of my seat. I would highly recommend this to everyone. I have Do Wah Diddy-Die and Byte Me to read and I am looking forward to losing myself in another page turner. I hope the author continues to keep them coming. I put her up there (in my book) with Janet Evanovich and Nancy Bartholomew.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Last Enemy-- A Must Read, January 22, 2000
By

Given the fact that the author is my sister-in-law, my review may seem biased. However, it is my considered opinion, that this is Pauline's best work yet. The plot carries the reader rapidly to the conclusion. The characters are timely and believably human though intriguing enough to capture the imagination. It is a must read for any who enjoy plenty of action and with a measure of romance thrown in. I give it four stars, because each of her books is better than the last, and I sincerely hope this won't be her last!

5.0 out of 5 stars Last Enemy is definitely a FIVE star!, March 28, 2001
After reading all Pauline Baird Jones' books, I'm convinced that she is the new Erma Bombeck. It is no surprise that film companies are searching her work out for projects! This is a must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cyberdrama, lust, humor and suspense, May 11, 2006
This review is from: The Last Enemy (Paperback)
Instead of following the plotline of a mystery novel, this book is a straight narrative of pursuit-based suspense, but the wherefores and whys of that chase unfold "mysteriously" through the course of the action. Combining the mishmash of virtual worlds, online communities, and the nocturnal activities of people deeply committed to changing society in their own way, this book pairs a gutsy romance writer against a series of dangers and culminates in love/lust, terror and heroism. The narrative is constantly witty and full of life, and arranges details in a compelling framework around each twist and turn of its plot. For those who would like to both enjoy reading about people and get entrenched in a fight to the finish, it's a compelling read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the movie!, March 28, 2001
I can see why this book was the RT Reviewer's Choice for best ebook of 1999. I'm glad to see it in print. This first-class suspense novel should be a movie. It has all the elements needed for a summer blockbuster. The cross-genre blend of comedy, suspense and romance is fresh and satisfying, and her characters are so real and engaging, they could walk right off the page. I would recommend this fun and fulfilling book for anyone who is tired of traditional popular fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ye-ha! It's the first book in an awesome series!, March 28, 2001

THE LAST ENEMY was an AWESOME read. I couldn't put it down (and I had to read parts of it with the lights on!). It's the first book in The Lonesome Lawmen series (BYTE ME is the second one)and I'm thrilled there will be a third one published soon! Pauline Baird Jones is on my keeper shelf with Robert Ludlum, J.D. Robb, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips. BTW, the reviewers were RIGHT ON about this book. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb and Compelling, March 31, 2001
How anyone who has read The Last Enemy can think it's anything but fabulous is beyond me. Pauline Jones is one of the better writers of nail-biting suspense out there today. I recommend The Last Enemy to everyone who loves a great story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, June 21, 2011
By
This review is from: The Last Enemy (Paperback)
Read this on kindle.

The author's strengths are her actions scenes and her wordplay. Jones writes some of the best action scenes I've ever read. They are tense, exciting, and well-plotted. I found this true in her sci-fi rom books, and it's true for the romantic suspense, The Last Enemy. Her way with words and phrases is superior. Even in this sometimes dark suspense, Jones makes you smile and even laugh out loud at the way the female leads looks at life.

Be cautioned that this isn't a light and fluffy story. It's gritty and the body count is high. Toward the end when Dani is enduring an exhausting ordeal, the reader is right there with her. Jones does a great job describing the characters physical and emotional states.

I admit to some problems with the first 25% of the book when I didn't agree with the choices Dani made, and felt her decisions hurt others. I came to understand her reasoning better as the book went on, but for a while I was stumped. Also, there was one part of the plot (dealing with Dani's online identities and who knew what) that seemed like a plot hole, although I didn't backtrack to see if I simply missed the explanation. (One reason I prefer print books. They're easier to search for information when you need to.)

Overall, very entertaining book. I found myself reading aloud parts to my husband so he could enjoy the humor with me. There is a lot of strong attraction and emotion between the lead characters, but it isn't acted on for the most part. There is angst, and it's very well done.
