5.0 out of 5 stars Great Band, Great 1st Albumn, August 6, 2001

I would disagree with those who have rated the albumn a 2 or 3. Even at MGB's worst Last of the Ghetto Astronauts is far better than 80 percent of the music out there. As mentioned by everyone here Alabama Motel Room rocks, but Haven't Slept In Years and Symbolistic White Walls are both great songs that should be given a lot more credit than they have been. I have seen MGB in concert at least half a dozen times and in all they have played Symbolistic once at my first concert and it blew me away. I think that the songs on the albumn are great (even if they aren't as focused as those on Underdogs or Beautiful), and MGB should bring them back out of the wood work in a live albumn.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a start!, January 26, 2000

I absolutely love this great band! All their albums are a sheer joy to listen to, over and over, and this 1995 debut effort is all the more amazing in that all their creativity, their remarkable energy, and the surprising diversity of their sounds comes out so clearly so early in the band's career. If you're familiar only with their more recent tunes, do yourself a favour and see where it all began!

mgb is one of the few bands I know of whose *every* song is worth listening to. My favourites on this great concept album are the funky "Vermilion", the dreamy "She's Got a New Disguise", the introspective "Fearless", and the great but hidden closing track.

Note to Matt Good and company -- get yourselves promoted in the States asap and rocket that original sound of yours to international superstardom! The world is waiting for you...

5.0 out of 5 stars Support the underdogs...buy this album, May 27, 2000
This review is from: Last of the Ghetto Astronauts (Audio CD)
I lived in Australia until I was 11, and during that time I hadto listen to my parents' music. Then we moved to South America for a few years ....So, musically speaking, moving to Canada was the best thing that ever happened to me. They actually have record stores and radio stations and things like that there. And even better, they have Matthew Good Band.

OK...Matthew Good Band. You probably haven't heard of them yet, but buy any one of their albums and you'll be instantly converted. Matthew Good is simply amazing. There is no one like him. (I mean, who else could sing, "gonna fly to hawaii, get laid in a lawn chair, drown in a bathtub, fill it with cheap beer" --and make you feel like crying? )

The band doesn't have one bad song, nor even one "just-okay" song. This album is no exception. It was the third of their albums I bought, and on the first listen I didn't like it as much as their latest two. Then I started listening to Symbolistic White Walls. I must have listened to that 6 times in one day. I think you'll find this album should be worth whatever you paid for it just for that song. The way he sings "Well it's all right now, take the world and make it yours again" gives you chills down your spine. This might be my favorite Matthew Good Band song, but I can never decide, because there are several other songs that are really close. (Apparitions, Raygun, Hello Time Bomb, I Miss New Wave, Rico, Load Me Up, Strange Days...I could go on...)

After Symbolistic White Walls hooked me, I got to know the rest of the album, and the other songs are almost as good. The best are Alabama Motel Room, She's Got a New Disguise, Vermilion, Native Son, and the hidden track, Omissions of the Omen. I love the other songs too. Radio Bomb is hilarious, and Every Name Is My Name is really cool, although it's more poetry set to music than a song. ("I made a movie about the end of the world, it was 12 seconds long and it didn't have a plot...")

If you don't have any Matthew Good Band albums yet, then don't delay. "Astronauts" is as good as any to start with, simply because it was their first album. And if you think this is good, wait until you hear Underdogs.
