Book Description

February 27, 2011
When three former cops commit suicide, private investigator Alec Santana knows it's not a coincidence. An ex-cop inexplicably commits suicide in Miami, and his widow turns to her husband's best friend, Alec Santana, for assistance. Soon after, two more ex-cops commit suicide. After talking to one of the widows, Santana discovers they all had a single event in common: they responded to a Christmas Eve fire almost fifteen years ago. Threatening letters turn up, prompting Alec to dig deeper into events from the past. He knows he's on the right track but things turn dangerous as someone tries to run him off the road. The police refuse to help, insisting there's no connection between the suicides and recent accidents. Alec hits one dead end after another in his search for suspects and he nearly gives up, until he uncovers a shocking secret...

5.0 out of 5 stars Author Ernesto Patino Continues His Winning Streak With THE LAST OF THE GOOD GUYS, July 10, 2011
This review is from: The Last of the Good Guys (Paperback)
We all have someone in our lives that we look up to and have the utmost respect for. When it comes to author Ernesto Patino's main character Alec Santana that individual is Ben Brody. So when he finds out that Ben has committed suicide with no apparent reason for the action, Ben's wife comes to Alec to help her make sense of it all. What follows is the discovery of even more suicides that would seem just coincidental if it wasn't for singular incident years ago that links all the individuals together.

For Alec this is personal, because as he sees it Ben was "the last of the good guys". If there was something more going on when it comes to his death, then Alec feels compelled to get to the bottom of it.

Written in the skillful way that Ernesto Patino has developed when it comes to a great story, THE LAST OF THE GOOD GUYS helps us to see what some will do to cover up a secret or keep the past buried.

Loved this book and the way that Alec Santana continues to exemplify the very qualities that you would hope your best friend would have. This was a great read for the summer or anytime you are looking for a tightly woven mystery that keeps the pages turning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secrets and Lies, July 2, 2011
This review is from: The Last of the Good Guys (Paperback)
The Last of the Good Guys is another interesting story by Ernesto Patino. Alec Santana, ex-cop and now an Insurance Claims adjuster, tries to help his best friend's wife find out why her husband killed himself. When more suicides occur and all connect back to an incident many years before, Alec knows he is being pulled deeply into a complicated mystery.

I really like the character of Alec Santana and his fledgling P.I. business. There were just enough characters involved to keep me guessing, but not too many to overcomplicate things. Secrets and lies always add up to a good mystery, and this author knows how to come up with some good secrets.

This is the second book by this author that I have read. I enjoyed Web of Secrets and The Last of the Good Guys both very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read, June 20, 2011
By
This review is from: The Last of the Good Guys (Paperback)
Ex cop Alex Santana, now a Private Investigator, is stunned when his best friend Ben Brody, still a cop, commits suicide. At the request of Ben's widow, Alex takes the case. Two more cops commit suicide. Alex finds the common thread linking the three together goes back fifteen years to a rescue of a child from a burning house. And before each suicide each victim received a letter citing the event and giving the cop the option of killing himself or else the letter's originator would tell what really happened on that Christmas Eve.
Alex's life is threatened, the police refuse to help but Alex stubbornly keeps digging into the past uncovering clues and running into one dead end after another. Enlisting the help of an old friend, Cecil, Alex makes a discovery that turns the case around to where it starts to make some sense. All he has to do is stay alive long enough to put all the pieces together.
Ernesto Patino has a unique way of taking a story and filling it with twists and turns all mixed together in a smooth blend. It is this rare quality of his work that keeps a reader on the edge of the seat and makes a page turner of them. His story in The Last of The Good Guys starts out strong, peaking the reader's interest, keeping it elevated throughout the book then crescendos into an all time high with a surprise ending you can't possibly see coming. Patino is a master at storytelling and I highly recommend this book.
