3.0 out of 5 stars Atypical Lo-fi Record, February 25, 2003

Fans of Guided By Voices, Sebadoh, Shrimper and Pere Ubu will dig this record. It's sort of like Peter Laughner in a NYC 4-track basement sort of way. Definitely interesting. Reminds me of Eric's Trip meets Velvet Underground as well. What he lacks as a vocalist, he makes up as a songwriter.

Tracks 1-7, 10-14 are 1990 cassette
8,9 are from a 7" single from 1990

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy it while you can!, March 1, 2007

This album - unlike most of Peter's impressive career - is a bit hit-and-miss. There's experimenting going on, but three tracks are outstanding. Catapult is classic Jefferies, with a lurching, drum-driven rhythm. The Other Side of Reason is a nasty little number that crosses Lou Reed with a homeless drunk. But the real centerpiece is The Fate of the Human Carbine, recorded with Robbie Muir. A surreal ballad that ranks as one of New Zealand's great songs.
