Book Description

December 6, 2001
The world is reaching crisis point, as population growth escalates out of control, and species and cultures are being destroyed. With humans across the globe encroaching further and further upon Earth's resources, the realisation that the supply is finite has dawned and we now face the urgent dilemma of knowing how to create a sustainable future for ourselves. In this important book, award-winning author and international lecturer Thom Hartmann puts forward his lasting solution to our survival. Teaching us a new way of seeing, Hartmann introduces us to the lessons of our ancient ancestors - those which allowed sustainable living for many thousands of years but which we've forgotten. It is a call for consciousness combining spirituality and ecology that offers real hope for the future.

'THE LAST HOURS OF ANCIENT SUNLIGHT shines like a beacon in the darkness, an education about reality, a needed wake-up call, and a guidebook through the swamps of denial and ignorance into a brighter, sustainable future.' -- Dan Millman 'Thom Hartmann is one of those people who puts it all together for us, explaining not only what has seriously gone wrong in the world but, even more important, all that can still go right. He is an awakener of the highest order.' -- Marianne Willamson

More About the Author

Thom Hartmann, who started in radio in 1968, is also an internationally known speaker on culture and communications, an author, and an innovator in the fields of psychiatry, ecology, and economics. The co-founder (with his wife, Louise) of The New England Salem Children's Village (1978) and The Hunter School (1997), he has led national innovations in the areas of residential treatment for abused children and private/public education for learning-disabled children. Hartmann is the four-time Project Censored Award-winning, New York Times best-selling author of nineteen books currently in print in over a dozen languages on five continents. He is the former executive director of a residential treatment program for emotionally disturbed and abused children, and has helped set up hospitals, famine relief programs, schools, and refugee centers in India, Uganda, Australia, Colombia, Russia, and the United States through the German-based Salem International program. Formerly rostered with the State of Vermont as a psychotherapist, founder of The Michigan Healing Arts Center, and licensed as an NLP Trainer by Richard Bandler (who wrote the foreword to one of Thom's books), he was the originator of the revolutionary "Hunter/Farmer Hypothesis" to understand the psychiatric condition known as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). A guest faculty member at Goddard College in Vermont, he also synthesized the "Younger/Older Culture model" for describing the underpinnings - and possible solutions - to the world's ecological and socio-political crises, suggesting that many of our problems are grounded in cultural "stories" which go back thousands of years. His most recent books are "Screwed: The Undeclared War Against the Middle Class," "The Edison Gene," "The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight," "Unequal Protection: The Rise of Corporate Dominance and the Theft of Human Rights," "We The People: A Call to Take Back America," and "What Would Jefferson Do?"

5.0 out of 5 stars The most important book you may ever read., December 12, 2005
This review is from: Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight (Paperback)
I have a hard time recommending this book outright because for those of you that have seen The Matrix, this is the red pill. If you read this book your perception of our world will be changed forever and it can't be taken back. If you are happy with your life and comfortable with the world your children will inherit then this book is not for you.
Thom Hartmann has put the history of humanity into a context that illustrates the current problems we are facing. From our dwindling energy resources to the consequences it will entail. This book will wake you up.
The first third of the book will show you what has gone wrong. Some may call it alarmist but even if only a quarter of it is based on fact and truth it is very scary indeed.
The second third discuses why we find ourselves in this position and where civilization made the wrong choices.
The last third of the book brings up what we may do to change our culture before if is to late.
I know this review may seem doomsaying and defeatist but look around yourself at the world and your relationship with it. Are you satisfied with what you see?
This book is a must read for everybody who wonders why there is a homeless person standing at their interstate offramp; it is for those of you who may be discouraged with your employer and the benefits you're given; it is for families worried about what sort of life they're children may live.
This book is important do not take this review lightly.

This review is from: Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight (Paperback)
Mr. Hartmann shares with his readers the alarming rate that our eco-system is deteriorating. This book, 'The Last Hours Of Ancient Sunlight', is filled with vital statistics concerning the accelerating rate of polution, carbon dioxide, waste products, and other contaminents that are contributing to global warming. He warns us that if the countries of the world do not take the steps necessary to stop the warming effect and contamination of our waters, then we have but a short time left before life will cease to exist, at least on the surface of the planet. Thom Hartmann is well informed and has done his homework and sends a plea out to each of us to take the measures necessary to reverse global warming in all its aspects. This book is highly recommended for all those that are concerned about the welfare of life on this planet.
