This review is from: Last King of Poland Pb (Paperback)
Stanislaw Poniatowski, the last king of Poland has to be one of history's most tragic figures. Elected to the throne with the help of his ex-lover, Catherine the Great of Russia, who by that time already held Poland in a stranglehold, Poniatowska constantly walked a tightrope, trying to strengthen his beloved Poland while not antagonizing its eastern neighbor.
Poniatowski couldn't win. Nationalists saw him as a puppet of Muscowy while the magnates felt the reform-minded king threatened their power. Poland's May Constitution of 1791 was the last straw for Catherine and the Polish magnates. The country was subsequently divided between her neighbors and Poniatowski was taken to St. Petersberg to live out his remaining years. Zamoyski is one of Poland's most able historians and this book is a very readable and enjoyable account. |
