4.0 out of 5 stars The real J Frank Wilson, February 14, 2009
This review is from: Last Kiss (Audio CD)
I was totally blown away by "Last Kiss" when I first heard it as a teenager a little over four decades ago. I was so excited by this song that I bought the follow up "Six Boys", and then the only other 45 rpm that I know about by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers, "Speak To Me". I bought this CD because it was the first time I had seen what I have on 45's (other than "Last Kiss" which is in a myriad of anthologies) in CD format. "Six Boys" is to me a forgettable song about a teenage girl's funeral. At the time, everyone I knew assumed, as did most of the DJ's on the stations I listened to, that the dead girl who was at the center of "Six Boys" was the one who died in "Last Kiss". More realistically, probably someone assumed that one dead teenager song should be followed up by another. Musically, "Six Boys" had little in common with "Last Kiss", and it went nowhere on the charts. Their third release, "Speak to Me" begins with a great bass hook, as does "Last Kiss". I loved "Speak to Me" from the time I first heard it. It has been going through my head for years, so I was quite excited to find it on CD. Musically and lyrically it comes straight from the Buddy Holly / Roy Orbison tradition, with a bass line that seems more Motown.

The rest of the CD would be of interest to people who want something that sounds like the kind of rockabilly band that might have played at a high school sock hop in the early to mid 1960's. There are covers of Ray Peterson's "Tell Laura I Love Her" (another classic dying teenager song) and Roy Orbison's "Only the Lonely", as well as other songs that invoke a similar mood.

I highly recommend this people who know and like or want to know more about J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers than "Last Kiss", or to people who want to get a feel for the kind of things that high school kids in the early to mid 1960's were listening and dancing to.

For those like me who are purists, the tracks that I can match on this CD to what I have on vinyl appear to be the originals rather than re-recordings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Product information..., July 22, 2010
This review is from: Last Kiss (Audio CD)
This is not a review of the product per se... but merely information to warn a prospective purchaser about misleading postings for this item. This product is the 10-track 1995 Collectables reissue on CD of the "Last Kiss" LP. An image has been posted showing the back cover of a compilation CD on the Teenager label. The Teenager CD has many more tracks than the Collectables piece. Verify which CD you're going to receive before ordering as if you think you're getting the larger Teenager CD, technically, this product listing is for the shorter Collectables item.
