ROSALBA (Licia Maglietta) is a bored housewife who lives on the Adriatic Coast. On the family's annual holiday, she is left behind at the rest stop as the tour bus hurries to its next destination. Furious, she decides to hitchhike home to punish her indifferent husband MIMMO and heir two sons. One ride leads to another, and eventually Rosalba finds herfself in Venice. Entranced by the city, she decides to stay longer and quickly befriends and odd but lovable collection of locals including FERNANDO (Bruno Ganz), a melancholic waiter from Iceland who speaks in flowerly epic verse. In the meantime, Mimmo is at wit's end since his mistress refuses to iron his shirts. He dispatches CONSTANTINO (Giuseppe Battiston), and out of work plumber who reads detective fiction, to find his errant wife. Will Rosalba return to her supressed life with Mimmo or will she decide to stay in Venice and, for perhaps the first time, start living for herself?
