Iinteresting book in some parts, but overall the plot was just so unbelievable and overly complicated

It was hard to believe that a 17-year-old could handle the mystery and convoluted plot with so much maturity. (I have two children and I remember what they were like at that age.) That was very unrealistic. The parents were very strange also and definitely not sympathetic. The father was very detached until the end when he did a 180-degree turn and became a concerned parent. The mother was just plain weird. All in all, although it was an interesting book in some parts, overall the plot was just so unbelievable and overly complicated that I didn't enjoy the book all that much. When I finished the book, I was wondering if the author intended it to be a farce or some other joke.
