A Great Comedy!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Last Married Couple in America [VHS] (VHS Tape)
An extremely funny film! A compilation of comedy that is hysterical from beginning to end! Dom Deluise is at his best in his supporting role as George Segal's good friend, and George Segal, as always, is wildly emotional! Valerie Harper is also on hand and gives a great performance as Natalie Wood's best friend. Natalie Wood is stunning and quite funny as the wife of George Segal. It shows her acting talents in a different light and gives us another side to remember her by.

Not so different from today...,

Despite the film's outrageous clothes and bad perms that just scream 1980, "The Last Married Couple in America" is surprisingly relevant in the 21st century. Married couples are STILL breaking up at alarming rates twenty five years later. The only difference is no one's shocked anymore...which would make Mari and Jeff Thompson's dismay a bit outdated to our modern eyes, though no less heartfelt.
In our current culture that demonizes any kind of misconceived "threat" (gay marriage, feminism, happily single men and women, whatever victim you want to choose) to traditional marriage, it's nice to see that at one time people actually worried about fixing their own affairs rather than blaming others!! I'm a bit biased because I'm a huge Natalie Wood fan and love her later work ("The Cracker Factory," "The Affair," even the remake of "From Here to Eternity") but I have to say I enjoyed this film, warts and all. It seems that almost every film made in the late 70s and early 80s featured oddly dressed characters dancing to new wave/disco (think "Xanadu"). Don't let the occasional fashion faux pas divert your attention from the fact you could learn a lot about what makes a good marriage work! George Segal's warm-hearted, goofy charm and Natalie Wood's wise, but innocent ways create an energy that help "The Last Married Couple in America" get through the rough spots.

I remember seeing this film when it first came out when I was in my early 20's. In fact, the first place that I visited upon moving out to LA was "Tommy Original Burgers (discovered from this film)!" LOL I personally find Natalie Wood wonderful in every film that she's ever done. And I particularly love seeing her looking good and as sharp as ever at 40! Heck, she's a pretty good football player too (see the film)! Now its some 23 years later. I am now a few years older than Nat was when she made the film. I'm married with kids. This film means more to me now than ever! NOW, I get the story! Heck, I'm livin it! LOL The protagonists that manage to destabalize the marriage between Nat and George's charcters make sense! Its more amusing than ever. There are a few "period" side stories to the film (it was made in the late 70's), but everything that they present about marriage is true. And some of the side character's acting comes across as flat...still... Valerie Harper is particularly good and funny as Natalie's friend who -- as Nat's husband later remarks -- is "not such a good friend" afterall! AND, Natalie and George both shine in the film. Particularly on their night out for his birthday! Natalie's swearing and beating up George in the film makes me laugh too! Find it. See it. NJ/Ordinaryfool

I had a copy of a copy of a copy.......you get the picture, a very poor quality one. I liked the movie, and wanted an original copy of it. It is a very hard to find movie, and as far as I know it's not available on DVD. A very well played and funny movie, with many well known actors and actresses. The best part in my honest opinion is the small contribution that Dom DeLuise (ok I can't spell) made in this film.

Intelligent Sex Farce That Will Make You Laugh,
By
This review is from: The Last Married Couple in America [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Ok, so this is no "Four Seasons," "Bob and Carol," or even "10," but what it is is a 1980 well-to-do California slice-of-life sex farce starring the very funny George Segal and the equally engaging Natalie Wood.
If you were around in those days, you remember the all-wood kitchens (they even had a wood-paneled refrigerator!), the ferns, the silver lampshades, roller blades, disco parties, and groovy tennis outfits. You also had the rather intelligent approach to the lives of married couples, including the psychoanalysis, the "getting in touch with one's feelings," and all the baggage that went along with it. In the end, like "Bob and Carol" or "10," the protagonists decide that square dull married life is better after all, and they are the better for it. Along the way, however, get ready for some very adult laughs and a penetrating look at a certain strata of society during a very interesting time.

It is a funny movie dealing with the not so funny issue of being bored in ones marriage and infidelity. Although it is a comedy it does show with a degree of reality the negative consequences that can take place when you think that the grass in greener on the other side. I can't get over Valerie Harper (aka Rhoda) playing this sexy little temptress character, LOL! (I am using those words because this is a public forum and I can't use the words that I would like to, let's just say she was promiscuous) But she played it well. And of course I have a weakness for anything that George Segal is in, and Natalie Wood to me was one of the most beautiul women in Hollywood. But anyhoo, Great movie. I wish it was offered in a DVD format that could be used in the States. : (
