Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Flanagan, executive editor of Musician magazine, humorously examines the impact of the Stooges on the CIA, the Catholic Church, Watergate, literature, art, music and etiquette. He exhibits fine satirical instincts, but the premise of his parody is weakened by the fact that Moe, Larry and Curly have indeed been an influence. Beat literature, Flanagan states, is a "rehash of the Stooges literary innovations," yet he is apparently unaware of Kerouac's memorable "Supposing the Three Stooges were real?" passage in Visions of Cody. A brief chapter on rock cites three songs with Stooge references yet ignores the popularity of Jump in the Saddle's "Curly Shuffle" and the dance competitions it inspired. Stooge fans will appreciate this book, but those who buy it for a legitimate study will feel cheated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterically funny, April 9, 2005
This review is from: Last of the Moe Haircuts (Paperback)
Especially the parts about the Catholic Church: "In all the world, perhaps only Lyndon Johnson could understand how lonely a place Shemp and Pope Paul VI occupied."

At the time I wrote this, all reviews were either 1 or 5 stars, nothing in between. Readers loved it or hated it. I would imagine that all readers would have strong reactions, one way or the other.

5.0 out of 5 stars Satire Worthy Of Swift, April 20, 2000
By
This review is from: Last of the Moe Haircuts (Paperback)
A tremendous satirical review of the Three Stooges impact on popular culture. I would recommend this title highly to anyone. The succession of the papacy as compared to the third stooge position (Popes John XXIII, Paul VI, and John-Pauls I & II vs. Curly, Shemp, Joe, and Curley-Joe)is alone enough genius to make the price worthwhile.

1.0 out of 5 stars Must NOT Be The Haircut, July 16, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Last of the Moe Haircuts (Paperback)
In Last of the Moe Haircuts, the actual Stooge content is minimal, the humor is nominal and much of Flanagan's dated satire completely misses the mark. Only Stooge completists should bother adding this title to their libraries.
