AN ACHINGLY BEAUTIFUL MOVIE SOUNDTRACK...,
By Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04) (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Last Of The Mohicans: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I had never before bought a soundtrack for a movie that wasn't a musical. This was an exception. Who couldn't help but buy this CD? It is simply one of the most beautiful movie soundtracks of all time, as it perfectly conveys the romance, urgency, and adventure of the movie. It resonates and soars, capturing the essence of the film.Beautifully orchestrated, tracks one through nine were composed by Trevor Jones, and his use of drums, brass, and strings to convey the sweeping saga of the movie is masterful and full of powerful, pulse pounding emotion. Yet, at the same time the music is often poignant. There is a seamless transition to tracks ten through fifteen which were composed by Randy Edelman and are likewise beautiful, but lighter and more ephemeral in tone. The music is more hopeful and mellow, yet at the same time wondrously melodic. The collaborative efforts of the two composers have produced a timeless masterpiece. This is a CD to treasure.

I completely agree with the person who said that they did not appreciate that "Promentory" was cut. I also wish that the end credits from the movie would've been included on the CD. What a gorgeous piece of music. That would've made it so complete. The endings on some of the tracks seem abrupt, like they had to tie it up really quick in order for it to fit on the soundtrack. That kind of bugged me a little. The Last of the Mohicans is my favorite movie of all time (I cannot count how many times I've seen it). It moved me (and continues to move me) emotionally, and it really takes a lot for me to listen to the soundtrack without getting depressed. Pathetic, I know, but I can't help it. I give it four stars because no doubt, the music is beautiful (my favorites being Cora, The Courier, and I Will Find You), but for the omissions, I had to take away a star.

The Greatest Soundtrack from the Greatest Movie Ever!,
By anna-joelle (Malaysia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Last Of The Mohicans: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This OST consists of 16 incredibly beautiful and deeply moving music that complemented scenes from the movie perfectly. Trevor Jones composed the first 9 tracks of the album, while Randy Edelman wrote Tracks 10 - 15 (Track 16 is a short song by the group Clannad). Both Jones and Edelman did a brilliant job on the album, although Jones's "Main Title" and another track, "Promentory" remain the most memorable numbers (and my favourites). I also like Jones's "The Kiss" and "The Glade Part II".A couple of Edelman's compositions which I find truly beautiful and outstanding are "The Courier" and "Cora". I play this soundtrack every morning before leaving for work and first thing upon returning home. The music soothes the soul and makes me think (and dream) of the movie a lot, especially of the handsome and heroic Uncas, who's my favourite character in the movie. In my mind and heart, "Promentory" will always be Uncas's song (it recalls vividly to the mind the poignant scene towards the end of the movie of Uncas climbing the cliffs determinedly and fearlessly in order to rescue his love, Alice). How I adore the movie and its music! They will remain my favourites FOREVER.

I enjoyed the Last of the Mohicans when I first saw the movie in Theatre. It is a powerful production; full of love, tragedy, and suspense.
A couple of years later, a friend loaned me the tape soundtrack. It was then that I realized the power of the film is entirely carried by the music. Each selection will evoke the emotion of that scene. A good soundtrack always recalls the movie and inspires the emotion. It is an understatement that Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman created a 'good' arrangement of music. The unique factor for this soundtrack is that it stands on its own as a great collection of art. The arrangement of the sound tells a powerful story that can remain seperate from the film and maintain its' appeal. Everybody knows the soundtrack or at least has some familiarity with at least one selection from the CD. I recommend this CD as a great improvement from the old audio tape, as an outstanding soundtrack and as a timeless collection of relaxing and passionate music.

I've read the book, seen the movie and bought the sound track. The music captures the essence and grandeur of the story. It is at once tragic and heroic, melancholy and romatic, stark and awesome. This is a piece of music that won't age. Everything is captured and frozen in the moments of battle and glory, loss and gain. It is a soundtrack you can keep going back to, and when no one is home you can crank up the speakers to a suitable volume. Even if you don't care for the movie or want to read the book, the music is spectacular.

While I don't rate this quite a five star score, it's pretty close. I didn't have any interest in the soundtrack, and haven't seen the movie; but when I followed a link off another of Edelman's scores (Dragonheart, which is a definite must have masterpiece of brilliance!) and read all the good reviews, I decided to give it a try. I did have some misgivings though, and didn't expect to be really wowed by it, as so many others were. I hadn't even heard of Trevor Jones before, and wasn't sure if I would like his stuff. I'd really liked Edelman's stuff though, so I figured at least his tracks would be good.Well, when I received it and first played it, I was grabbed from the very beginning, and taken on a ride. From the beautiful and triumphant main theme, to the captivating romance themes laced with celtic violin (or fiddle) playing, to the driving, but not obnoxious action cues, I thouroughly enjoyed the listening experience. I would dare say I even liked it better than the highly touted Braveheart soundtrack, although I must admit that I do not own that one, and have not heard it as much as others. The funny thing was, I got it mainly with Edelman's pieces in mind, and was not overly impressed with those. They were not bad, but they were not nearly as good as some of his other works. They were a lot more subdued, especially compared to Jones' tracks earlier. At times it was a bit repettitive, but not really bad. While I don't really have anything bad to say about this soundtrack, it just doesn't quite get the full 5 stars in my book. But when you have about 60 scores, there's a lot more competiotion. Still, it is a VERY good soundtrack, and definitely worth getting if you like pretty, powerful, romantic, and moving music!

This Cd was much of what I expected. However I was severely disappointed when It came to I will find you- Clannad, which was one of the major factors in me getting this rather than just picking up the score at my local department store. In the movie this particular song is several minutes long with a number of verses, but on the cd they give you 1:42 which is just the first verse, you don't even get the verse for which the song was named.

I saw the movie as part of a date with a fellow musician. We were late to the cineplex and missed the original movie we'd wanted to see, so we saw the Last of the Mohicans instead. It was a great movie (and an okay date), but it was the score the moved me most of all.
I was entranced through the whole thing. Loved Jones' parts of the score with the theme that ran through all the movements. I bought this on cassette, and in that medium all his parts were conveniently on one side. I have an extensive music collection with both cassettes and CDs with very few items doubling between the two. This is one of the few that I have in multiple formats because I enjoyed it that much. One of my favorite movements of all orchestral music of all time is "Top of the World." The music advisor I had at the time, a very prolific composer, had a snobbish attitude toward film scoring. I brought "Top of the World" for him to hear, and he actually admitted liking that one when he generally doesn't like film music. My only complaint if I have one at all is that the Clannad song "I Will Find You" is too short on the soundtrack. I distinctly remember it being much longer in the film itself. That is the version I would rather hear than something that is over much too soon.

Excellent music,

This is wonderful music, certainly some of my favorite sounds. I have two objections, which prevent me from rating the CD five stars.First, not all the music is present. Music this lovely should not be suddenly cut off, nor left out of a soundtrack. "Promentory" and the end credits, both haunting pieces, should be here. Second, it annoys me no end that this soundtrack is not in the order in which the music occurs in the movie. When this came out on cassette, Jones' pieces were on one side, Edelman and Clannad on the other. But this is a CD, not a cassette. There is simply no reason, other than perhaps the egos of the two composers or laziness at the record company, to let this stay so disjointed. As I did with the cassette version, I will simply use this CD as a master to burn my own CD, placing the music in the order it occurs in the movie. Then I can truly enjoy it.

The soaring strains of this soundtrack have been lodged in my heart since I first listened to it when I viewed 'Last of the Mohicans' on its first run twenty-plus years ago. I think it's a work of great inspiration; heroic, majestic, lyrical and full of the pathos that is at the essence of the film. Whoever chose this composer knew what he was doing. The movie is lifted up, magnified and a perfect match for its subject: the great drama of savagery, honor and self-sacrifice on America's wild 18th century frontier. It is music that is full of beauty and bold purpose, as much great art as any symphony. I would (and have) watched the film simply to listen to the soundtrack. I cannot recommend it more highly.
