Book Description

The Last Mythal October 9, 2007
"All-in-all, this is perhaps the best-written Realms novel yet."
--Ed Greenwood (creator of the Forgotten Realms(R)) on Forsaken House

When a half-elf, half-demon villain is released from thousands of years of captivity, the very heart of the elven community of Faerûn is threatened. And the only hope the elves have of defeating the vile daemonfey hordes is to once again return to the lands of Faerûn, to the forests of Cormanthor, and to the demon-haunted ruins of Myth Drannor.

This deluxe gift set contains the novels Forsaken House, Farthest Reach, and Final Gate.

Modern literature is all about characters. The successful television shows focus on characters, and the storyline is a necessary vehicle. Cheers, the Simpsons, South Park... shows that had long runs were all about character. Richard Baker's "Last Mythal" series focuses again on some very well created characters whose names we can never quite pronounce. The main character, a young Elven wizard named Araevin (and for an elf, "young" is a relative term) is on the cusp of greatness. But the coming war with a half elf demon princess and her army will make heroes of Araevin and his companions: some of them posthumously. It is a very well written series of books, and fellow D&D geeks like myself will see the (3.x) dice rolling throughout most of the story if we're looking for them. Familiarity with the rules of the game is not a pre-requisite for understanding the story, however, and that makes Mr. Baker's work ring honest. Mr. Baker is a contributing author for Wizards of the Coast and played a large role in the creation of 4th Edition Dungeons and Dragons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Matchless!!!, January 26, 2012
This review is from: The Last Mythal Gift Set (Paperback)
Most of the dungeon masters and players hate power play in their games and for this reason they cannot stand Salvatore's Drizzt novels in which the characters are perfect and matchless. However, Richard Baker's Araevin Teshurr is far from being invincible (both physically and mentally). The story is fabulous and Richard Baker has a wonderful writing style. But these are not the only reasons that make this trilogy perfect. Being a game designer, Richard Baker is well aware of the history of Forgotten Realms, races, deities, famous characters, spells and limitations... Hence, he tells his story both as a novelist and a dungeon master.

For the first book of the trilogy Forsaken House, Ed Greenwood said "All-in-all, this is perhaps the best-written Realms novel yet" and I cannot agree more. Moreover, I believe that this is perhaps the best-written Realms trilogy yet. This is a trilogy that you would want to read more than once.
