Book Description

November 2000
Founded by Heinrich Himmler in 1944 when it became clear Germany would be invaded, the Werewolf guerrilla movement was given the task of slowing down the Allied advance to allow time for the success of negotiations, or "wonder weapons." Staying behind in territory occupied by the Allies, its mission was to carry out acts of sabotage, arson, and assassination, both of enemy troops and of "defeatist" Germans. Perry Biddiscombe details Werewolf operations against the British, Russians, and fellow Germans, on the Eastern and Western Fronts and in the post-war chaos of Berlin. Giving the lie to the established story of a cowed German population meekly submitting to defeat, this is a fascinating insight into what has been described as "the death scream of the Nazi regime."

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The book explores the background to the movement its opinions, and its wholly negative legacy...This type of terrorism is a nasty constant in the history of the German radical right" --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Founded by Heinrich Himmler in 1944 when it became clear Germany would be invaded, the Werewolf guerrilla movement was given the task of slowing down the Allied advance to allow time for the success of negotiations or “wonder weapons”. Staying behind in territory occupied by the Allies, its mission was to carry out acts of sabotage, arson and assassination, both of enemy troops and of “defeatist” Germans. Perry Biddiscombe has researched the movement exhaustively, and details Werewolf operations against the British, Russians and fellow Germans, on the Eastern and Western Fronts and in the post–war chaos of Berlin. Giving the lie to the established story of a cowed German population meekly submitting to defeat, this is a fascinating insight into what has been described as “the death scream of the Nazi regime”.

Perry Biddiscombe is Associate Professor of History at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. He is the world expert on the Nazi Werewolf bands. His next book, The SS Hunter Battalions, will be published by Tempus. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story, oddly structured..., May 9, 2010

Here's the thing.. I enjoy hard historical military literature. I enjoy picking the brains of great generals and statesmen, etc. But this book drags on at first. I think it is the structure of the book. The author is very capable of telling a great story and the material is well researched and interesting. The problem lies in the fact that the first section of the book goes into great detail involving the hierarchy of the Werwolf movement which, even by nazi standards, was a jumbled bureaucratic mess.

Solution? Easy. Jump around. Read about the Werwolf exploits, then their mottled command structure.

Final word is, if you are interested in or ever wanted to discover more about the Nazi guerilla movement I highly recommend this book. There are plenty of great, well documented stories of the insurgents and their methods. They just surface a bit later in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read., December 22, 2011

Lots of info on ways the Werewolves harassed the axis power. To compare the Werewolves to Muslim Insurgents is hogwash. These are the real deal. The Muslims should be considered blessed that the Americans don't treat them the way they treated the Germans. (i.e. whole villages leveled for 1 sniper, all women in 1 village being raped)

3.0 out of 5 stars Not trying hard enough, January 20, 2001
By
This review is from: The Last Nazis: SS Werewolf Guerrilla Resistance in Europe 1944-1947 (Hardcover)
This historical reasearch is in my accounts, just short of a good book. Even though the author spends a good amount of time explaining the origins and training of these bandits of a lost cause, I find in too many places, especially in 4th and 5th chapter, unfinished research of the fate of many of the Werewolf leaders and other mebers, it is surprising too me, for example, that Dr. Perry had not been able to find out if one the arrested Germans had been executed or not. In my view it a matter of digging deep enough in Allied archives, too bring the answer. That's called research. The good aspect of this book is that it gives a reasonable insight into this interesting period of the Nazi era. The author had a good and a fascanating subject in his hands but fails too complete the research on the matter.
