Strong lyrics, great voice,

I'm not sure that I can agree with the reviewer below that thinks Jenn Lindsay will ever be 'big' but then stranger things have happened...
I can say she's a great sort of counter-culture-folk-rock-whatever artist. I hate to try and compare artist but since she isn't a household name let's say she falls somewhere between Jewel and Ani DiFranco. I agree that "Whiteroom" is a good place to start, but I would move quickly onto "Sidewalk Song" which for me is the strongest on the album. I think she has like 3 or 4 other CDs. I have "FIRED!" which is also a very strong CD.

Good on the ends, rough in the middle,

It's a good CD but a little inconsistent. It opens very strong (Whiteroom, Cedartrees, are both great) but tapers off in the middle (Doggy and Close could have been left off the album). Fortunately it picks up around Jill+Jill and by Sidewalksong we are back in business.

The next big thing?,

I'm honestly not clear as to why Jenn Lindsay isn't famous. Now I like a lot of music that just doesn't have a wide enough appeal to ever make it on the radio. So though I like her music a lot I know I'm not the best judge of popular taste.
However I took note when my two daughters (21 and 23) and their friends became rabid fans of this CD and stole it from me. I came here to buy another for me because they have made it clear I'm too old for it so forget getting my CD back. This time I'm keeping it in my car. Anyway... Lindsay has that young, hip, indie sound that frankly sells a lot of CDs these days. Give "Whiteroom" a listen and see if you don't agree it should be all over the radio. And then buy it despite that fact.

Bring it on!,

Personal. Political. Radical. Emotional. Are you too far gone that you can't connect to a woman with a voice that tears you inside out and burns you like asphalt on a hot day? I saw Jenn live once in New York and she's been burning up my iPod ever since. It used to be you had to go to CDBaby to get her music, but finally Amazon has this one. Where are the rest??? If you like this go for Bring It On, which is one her best CDs.

This album is phenominal. Jenn's incredible at crafting songs that reach inside you and stick to your ribcage for a long time. Beautyqueen, Sidewalksong, Jill+Jill and Uncle Sam are my favorites. Do yourself a favor, buy the album, then come to New York and see her play, you'll thank me.

THE singer, THE album, we've been waiting for,

I have been following Jenn Lindsay for a few years now, ever since she became part of the buzzing urban folk scene in NYC. At first, I was drawn to her because she was writing passionate songs with very, very smart lyrics. She refines her approach with each album, though. This new one is a marvel. Lindsay has an incredible voice -- it makes me think of Natalie Merchant, or Dido -- married to lyrics which go far beyond those two artists. That said, the choruses are often simpler here than on her earlier albums. I assume that's why one reviewer recommended "Gotta Lotta" instead. Gotta Lotta is a great album, well worth it, but the reviewer missed the point. Remember when R.E.M. went from writing odd stuff about "The Moral Kiosk" to writing "Everybody Hurts," and suddenly it was as if they were speaking directly to you? Or when Ani sudddenly burst out with "**** you, and your untouchable face"? That's the kind of simplicity Lindsay works with here. Quirky singers like Joanna Newsom mean a ton to me, but darn it if you don't need somebody to write anthems that set you free. This album is full of those.

I respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer and say that there is plenty of good stuff here that warrants regular listening, not just a single run-though. This is another great album in a growing list of great albums. Jenn's music is so real. Sometimes raw and raging; sometimes smooth and thoughtful; sometimes corny; sometimes hilarious; sometimes political....but always real. I agree with other reviewers that the strongest tracks bookend the album and that Sidewalk Song, Jill+Jill, White Room, and Cedar Trees are tops. Frankly, Sidewalk Song alone warrants buying this album..it's stupid good.

Jenn is an anti-folk force not to be missed,
By J. Paz (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Last New York Horn (Audio CD)
Jenn Lindsay is a fabulous singer/songwriter, and an essential member of the modern or anti-folk music scene of NYC. Her songs cover a wide range of moods and styles, but they area always honest and heartfelt (without being sentimental and trite - a difficult balance that she seems to have under control). This album is a bit more polished and `rockin' than her previous albums which tend to focus more on the singer and her guitar. Both of these styles fit Jenn, and I'm glad to see her embracing both the more sparse and the more lush, as there is great value in both and both have their place.
There are so many great songs on this album - really something for nearly every mood. The opening tune, White Room, packs a punch and is a perfect attention grabber. The rest of the album doesn't disappoint. Jenn is releasing two new albums this month and I cannot wait to hear her new endeavours. She is an exciting musician and a thoughtful lyricist who deserves more attention than she usually gets. This album is worthy of every second invested in it. |
