The man lives the guitar; his must be surgically attached. One can honestly feel his guitar breathe in "The B.P. Blues". His decades as a session guitarist have tempered his into a style one no one else comes close to. The seemimg simplicity and emotional depth of some of his riffs - man alive! This is one of the finest jazz-fusion albumns I've ever had the pleasure to listen to. It's one of those albumns make's me wish I'd taken up knitting instead of the guitar.....how can anyone be that good? I can't stop listening to it!

I've seen Larry Carlton 4 times over the years. He was really 'on' twice and seemed a bit uninterested the other two. This record is definitely Larry on a good night. He gets into one of his patented runs on "Don't Give It Up" that makes you think he could go on forever spitting out clean, melodic lines. And "Last Nite" has a really wild run where he seems to chase down the melody for a good 2 minutes before he finally catches it. My only complaint is the horns that were added later in the studio. It takes away from the live, spontaneous vibe of the tunes. Still, if you only know Larry Carlton from his mellow jazz period this is a great place to get acquainted with his earlier, shall we say, "more energetic" days.

Larry Carlton - Last Night
This album opened my eyes to the possibilities of fusion guitar - the subtlety the electric guitar is capable of and what a master can do to completely control tone and distortion. It also extended my view of the blues and jazz genres - the way he included arpeggiated ideas and intervallic leaps in his licks was new to me at the time, also. It's the only Larry Carlton album that I ever listen to these days as the others are too smooth and commercial for my tastes. This performance is a gem and is essential listening for anyone interested in jazz or fusion guitar.

This is Larry Carlton at his best. With that unique tone and style. Playing in a variety of styles. Gives "All Blues" and "So What" nice readings. Very imaginative solos. Larry wails on "B.P. Blues" shades of Robben Ford! Larry shows how well he can play a ballad on "Emotions Wound Us So". He plays it beautifully too. Really touching! He never overplays. The title track is a dark feel to it. It's funky too.
Larry plays with skill, taste and imagination here. This is with his regular working group at the time. Fine soloing by Terry Trotter on keyboards. Nice bass work by Abraham Laboriel.

There are very, very few whole albums which I can listen to regularly over the years. Individual tracks yes, but whole albums? Hmmm, I can count them on one hand. But Last Nite is definitely among them.
I love live recordings, and this has to be the finest, the most intimate, musically and rhythmically 'together' live performance I have ever heard. If you only buy one Carlton album, make it this one. I have four Carlton albums, and this is way, way better than the rest. I have no doubt it deserves my highest recommendation.

This is one of the best-sounding albums I own. I've owned the CD for years, but since I've been digging back into vinyl I thought I'd give the LP a go. It's great.

This album is just ridiculously good! No exaggeration full stop. I've had it for years and give it spin on a regular basis. It has a variety of upbeat and slower tunes including the appropriately named "Emotions Wound Us So" which a few reviewers have already mentioned. I'll play it for (often guitar playing) friends and they're left shaking their heads. Truly worth five stars. Give it 3 or 4 listens, you'll realize you've bought a gem. Just don't hesitate before it's not available anymore.
