In the days before rock 'n roll, March 26, 2002
This review is from: The Last Picture Show (1971 Film) (Audio CD)
Back in '71 at the age of 16, I saw a black-and-white film that still holds me in its grip. "The Last Picture Show" portrayed (in accurate detail) a view of early 50s life, one that did not include poodle skirts and malt shops. The music on the soundtrack introduced me to the music my parents had listened to twenty years earlier. My scratchy LP is around somewhere, so it is very satisfying to replace it with this CD. Jo Stafford's recording of "You Belong to Me" is one of the most hauntingly romantic one will ever hear. Even to contemporary listeners, you can't help but want to slow dance. The other selections are a good representation of what was popular during 1951-52 and provide a glimpse to what was on the radio in the days between the big bands and rock 'n roll.

Music that evokes another time and place, December 2, 2007
This review is from: The Last Picture Show (1971 Film) (Audio CD)
I'm so glad to have found a copy of this CD. The soundtrack vividly evokes the time and place of the story in the movie.
All of these songs - and singers - got radio play in that time and place. But in selecting this handful of tunes, the producers didn't sacrifice quality for authenticity. Hank Snow's "A Fool Such as I" is easy and smooth, as is Eddie Fisher's "Wish You Were Here." From Lefty Frizzell to Jo Stafford to Frankie Laine, each track is strong.
We've all wasted time and money on nostalgic music compilations, or soundtracks, with a high trash-to-treasure ratio. Not this CD; ten tracks, ten good songs.

One of my many favorite movies is "The Last Picture Show". A lot of great old country music was used throughout the film. Amazon found it for me. I experienced very prompt, professional, all-around excellent service from the seller. Thank-you, D.S.
