Editorial Reviews

A new live recording made in Stockholm, Sweden in 1997 by the legendary master of Tex-Mex music DOUG SAHM together with his THE LAST REAL TEXAS BLUES BAND featuring his son Shawn and sax ace Rocky Morales in a great performance with hits from the Sir Douglas Quintet and Texas Tornadoes days as well as ""Farmer John"", ""Treat Her Right"" and other rock classics. Never before released. The third CD release on the very special San Antonio Records label out of Sweden.

Contrary to one negative review written by an uneducated novice fan of Doug Sahm, this CD features an excellent and long-awaited live concert showcasing the greatest hits of Sir Douglas Quintet, some classic country and blues cover tunes and music from Sahm's two solo projects. Anyone who is familiar with his Last Texas Blues Band and Juke Box Music albums knows that Sahm played a unique style of rock n roll music which included classic blues as an influence. Sahm was influenced by blues and country music, but he was technically not an artist in either genre. Sahm was certainly influenced by many styles of music, but had no intention of recording a mundane white boy blues album with ten-minute jams and wanker guitar solos in the style of any given current so-called "blues" artist sporting a blonde pony tail hairstyle.

Sahm's projects are far more versatile, combining elements of cajun swamp pop, doo wop, tejano, classic country, and vintage rock n roll from the 1950s. The arrangements are excellent and the band is nearly perfect. For more than two decades, Sahm was often backed by a talented Texas-based group called The West Side Horns. Ironically, the West Side Horns played music typically dominated by African American musicians, but the band was actually comprised of Latinos. Over the course of two albums, Sahm recorded a mixture of covers and originals, which represent some of his best work as a solo artist.

This live album was professionally recorded in 1997 in the city of Stockholm, Sweden. The production and arrangements are outstanding and Doug's voice is in top form. The setlist is jam-packed with consistently good songs and I suspect this may cause some casual listeners to overlook the quality of each track on an individual basis.

Although this was recorded in 1997, just a couple of years before Doug's untimely early death in 1999, this live concert was not released until 2012. Apparently Doug was and still is, very popular in Scandinavia. The title really says it all. The band on this live CD, includes Shawn Sahm, Doug's son, on guitar & some vocals. The total running time is about 68 minutes. One thing that really stands out in this live recording, is the sounds of the backing horns. Plus, it doesn't have an accordian player. Augie Meyers is not in this particular band, even though Doug shouts out Augie's name several times, or at least there's no mention of Augie Meyers' name included in the liner notes.

The band included in this Album/CD (as listed in the liner notes) includes:
Doug Sahm, guitar, lead vocals
Shawn Sahm, guitar, vocals
Jack Barber, bass
Fran Christina, drums
Al Gomez, trumpet
Rocky Moralas, tenor sax
Artuo "Sause" Gonzales, keyboards
Janne Lindgren, steel guitar

Note: Long time compadre, Augie Meyers is not listed. This is kind of a "different" version of the "Sir Douglas Quintet".

The songs are as follows:
1.Farmer John
2.Talk to Me
3.Nitty Gritty
4.Nuevo Laredo
5.Dealer's Blues
6.Bad Boy
7.Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone
8.Pick Me Up On Your Way Down
9.Adios Mexico
10.(Hey Baby) Que Paso
11.Wasted Days & Wasted Nights
12.She's About a Mover
13.Mendocino/Dyamite Woman
14.Meet Me in Stockholm
15.Treat Her Right (Recorded in Belgium on Aug.2, 1997.)

This is one super fantastic live concert on CD, and I highly recommend it. Thanks, and I hope this review has been helpful.

sonics are very good for a live recording. not sure of date, but I am guessing this show was @1995-96? great live show banter/comments from Doug, and the usual superb musicianship and tight band. If you are a Doug Sahm fan, this is definitely one to get !!
