A transition,
By S. Kelley "Oblate spheroid-shaped head and torso" (kitchen table, eating HUGE quantities) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)

In a way, the first book of the Last Rebel series is the end of the Ashes series. I enjoyed this book and believe it is a "must read" for anybody who enjoyed the Ashes series.
Though William Johnstone has departed this plane of existence and "ghost writers" have been writing the various series since his passing the basic "pablum for the masses" does not require the highest caliber of writers to create stories of this type. I am one of the Ashes series fans who despaired of the route the author trod as the series matured. How I longed for a reappearance of the Prophet and despaired of the continual reemergence of the same old bad guys. But, these stories were intentional fluff written to entertain without requiring much thought. Sometimes we need some basic pablumy-like fluff to settle back with on a chill drizzly afternoon. For that, the Ashes and its follow-on, the Last Rebel series, is good enough for me.

I'd give it half a star if I could,

As a big fan of the Ashes series, I've been disappointed of late with the last few books. Other reviewers have said that Mr. Johnstone is dead. I don't know if that is a fact or not. What I do know is that this book absolutely sucks. Poorly edited. No real plot. Survive plague, drive around, find dog, kill bad guys, find and fall in love with incredibly hot woman, kill more bad guys, girl gets kidnapped, hunt down kidnappers, kill them, and oh yeah, a big plot twist, this time the hero isn't quite in time, and the girl gets horribly disfigured. Those are the good points of the book. In an attempt to tie into the Ashes series, the new hero was with Raines when he died, and there are some Rebels left. However, there are no longer any women in the Rebel army, AND the timeline has been completely rewritten. The only positive thing to come out of this for was that I bought this waste of perfectly good paper USED!

My 1st review at Amazon....,

This review is from: The Last Rebel: Survivor (Paperback)
I read a great deal. From mystery to history to Science fiction to westerns to fantasy to just about anything... I have a fiction addiction..
That said..a Johnstone book is always a fun way to pass the time.. This is the first of a new series that springs out of the end of Johnstone's Ashes series... It's after a massive plague has killed most of humanity and Mountain Man comes out of the moutains to save humanity.. It's dark and broody, action filled, full of Mr. Johnstone's preaching about hope(one of the reasons to read a Johnstone book,IMO), freedom and responsiblity... If you like his other books ..you'll like this..don't look for major literature..it's just good old fashioned rip roaring mind candy...and that's what I want when I pick up one of his "end of the world books".. His weterns, however...are far more to my taste when I want something deeper and better than simple mind candy.. All in all a fun read of a couple of hours...not a bad way to spend a cold rainy day.

Long wait for next book in series,
By
This review is from: The Last Rebel: Survivor (Paperback)
just received an e-mail from WWJ (or the ghostwriter)
>>>The next book will be out in 2006. Sorry for the wait. >>>WWJ I just finished reading The Last Rebel: Survivor. I did like it, but it is not the same as previous books. It's a shame we have to wait until 2006 for the next book. I guess it takes awhile when you are dead. WWJ died 2/8/04

I've read all previous Ashes series books when they were originally published. This book was terrible. It was poorly written, contained numerous mistakes both in form and substance. If this is Johnstone's work then its time he retires.

Keep your money...,

Like in the last books of "The Ashes" series Mr. Johnstone has decided to include modern day events that did not happen in the timeline (ie: Iraq).
This series has a main character just like Ben, always hooking up with a lady. I could have predicted that. I could also predict that the first group of Rebels Jim came into contact with think Jim thinks like Ben. It appears that Mr. Johnstone has decided to write a book, and perhaps a series, for the mere sake of making money. I think you are better off keeping your money and spending it elsewhere.

I have as of yet to read "The Last Rebel Survivor". But It is part of the Ashes Series By: William W.Johnstone, I am on book #16 of the series and I can hardly wait to get back to reading it, so I know that "The Last Rebel Survivor will be of the same caliber of enjoyment. I think Johnstone is one of the best Authors I have read. Like I said I am sixteen books into the series and I can still hardly wait to relax and read this series. Most Definitely five (5) Stars. The price was good and the delivery also was timely Marvin Young

I wish I could kill these ghost writers,
By
This review is from: The Last Rebel: Survivor (Paperback)
Everyone William W. Johnstone is dead he died in 2004. The point is that whoever is writing these books is not Mr. Johnstone anymore then the guy writing the deathlands/outlander books is really James Axler. I give it two stars but no more then that. Basic plot nothing that sets it apart from any other book of adventure fiction don't bother.

Not bad,

It was a good book. The lead person is believeable and it speaks of a different kind of hero. One who isn't ready to fight at the drop of a hat.

Very Bad Rip Off!,

Mr. Johnstone must be running out of ideas for his books. This book is a very bad rip off of the Ashes series of books. Very dissappointed in this book.
