Editorial Reviews

Living Era’s "The Last of the Red Hot Mamas" (As She was Known) Presents a Matchless Survey of Sophie Tucker’s Most Famous Recordings, Opening with the Million-seller She Made with Ted Lewis in 1926, Some of These Days. Her Four Biggest Pre-electric Hits Are Included (You’ve Got to See Mama Every Night . . .), As is the Great Quartet of 1927 Tracks Backed by Miff Mole and his Molers (After You’ve Gone . . .). In all There Are 14 Chart Hits (There’ll Be Some Changes Made, the Lady is a Tramp . . .) Including Another Million-seller in her Heartfelt My Yiddishe Momme. She was the Mistress of the Double Entendre (Just Listen to He Hadn’t Up ’til Yesterday), and She Provided the Theme for a Mature Generation in Life Begins at Forty. In Every Sense, a Great Star!

Last of the Red Hot Mamas gives us twenty-six tracks by the immortal Sophie Tucker. Sophie called herself the last of the "red hot mamas;" and just one listen to this CD proves it!

"Some Of These Days" has a sweet violin but it leaves Sophie singing squarely in the spotlight. There is some surface noise but Sophie sings this with such gusto that you'll think it's a great number anyway. "Red Hot Mama" features Sophie belting out another fine tune; and her excellent diction bolsters her diction even more. "Red Hot Mama" showcases Sophie's self-confidence as a gal who knows how to get her man. Great!

"After You've Gone" is a masterpiece when Sophie sings this with all her heart and soul; I really love this number! "I Ain't Got Nobody" is a more melancholy tune that again gets so much power from Sophie's belting it out it sounds perfect all these years later. Nobody could sing these songs like Sophie could.

"Fifty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong" is a romantic tune that pokes fun at romance; and this tune has a great musical arrangement, especially for the piano and the brass. "There'll Be Some Changes Made" is another gem sparkling when Sophie sings it; and "The Man I Love" gets the royal treatment from Sophie as she delivers this with panache and all her heart. "The Man I Love" is a beautiful ballad as Sophie sings it to perfection and beyond.

"My Yiddishe Momme" gives us Sophie performing a lovely ethnic number about her mother--and loving mothers everywhere; and "He Hadn't Up 'Til Yesterday" tells the story of a woman and her man.

"Makin' Wicky Wacky Down in Waikiki" is a cute, playful tune about romance between men and women; the percussion and the brass really shine while Sophie sings this with all her might. "The Lady Is A Tramp" is beautifully done as Sophie sings this with panache; and the CD ends wonderfully with "Life Begins At Forty."

This CD is a must have for fans of the great Sophie Tucker--and, if you like playful songs about romance from the earlier years of the twentieth century, this is one CD you can't afford to miss.

Living Era has released a good collection of Sophie Tucker songs with no new titles for the dedicated Tucker fan. The sound is fine and the color version of a Maurice Seymour photo is gorgeous. If you have nothing else by Sophie, buy this one. However, you would be better off with the two CD set on Jasmine called The Great Sophie Tucker.
