Book Description

Gottingen Witch Mysteries August 1, 2000
When Keely Dunwich set up her law practice in a Nova Scotian fishing village, she certainly didn’t expect to be accused of witchcraft. True, she did inherit a fat old cat and a house crammed with witch paraphernalia, but she knew precious little about the religion of the witch; Wicca. Jay Holland, on the other hand, grew up in Gottingen, a place where folks were proud of their real witch and disappointed that Keely didn’t intend to pick up where her grandmother left off.

Keely's first case pits her against a powerful foreign conglomerate vigorously acquiring the Nova Scotian coastline. A grisly murder, a crystal ball that only glows for her, and an attraction to a man who may be a murderer, add up to an explosive welcome that nearly ends her career . . . and her life.

About the Author

Lynn is an author and screenwriter who lives with her husband, son, and two cats in a century-old house in rural Nova Scotia. She’s always had a fascination with the ocean, and especially loves it when the rocky headlands and fishing boats are shrouded in an eerie white. Lynn claims that it’s easy to believe in the supernatural when the foghorn wails and a step in either direction can land you in the brine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maritime for Murder, December 27, 2000
This review is from: Last Resort (A Gottingen Witch Mystery) (Paperback)
Lynn Turner invites the reader to the sheltered coves and rock-bound coasts of Nova Scotia, introducing Keely Dunwich, successful city lawyer seeking a slower pace amid her small town roots. The suspicious residents of Gottingen offer a mixed welcome when she inherits her grandmother's weathered jumble of a cottage complete with obese pussycat. Troubles have plagued the Maritimes since jobs disappeared with the cod moratorium. Now a secretive German consortium arrives to gobble oceanfront property for an exclusive resort. Suddenly Keely becomes embroiled in a murder and enamoured of a handsome cannery owner with a dark and brooding side. To add to the distractions, it seems that her Wiccan grandmother's gifts may have skipped a generation. Did that crystal ball really change colours? What is the ancient cat trying to convey? Shrugging off the antics as coincidence, she resists experimenting with the family powers.

Turner's romantic touch is deft, the attraction between Keely and the bold and complex Jay building slowly and subtly. The secondary characters, especially the prickly Delu, enhance the lively pace of a crafted plot through their consistent human motivations. Above all, the sense of place shines through sensory details. Enjoy a bowl of creamy lobster chowder, smell the salt sea air, and pick your way across the jagged rocks dripping with seaweed, until a rolling fog blots out the land that time and industry forgot.
