This review is from: The Last Resort Library (Paperback)
This novel is finely written, amusing, quixotic and immensely clever. Finkel is hugely entertaining with a cast of characters that would meld Henry James in detailed observation with Swift and Voltaire in its subtly wicked sense of humour. What a wonderful idea for a book, with an underlying satire worthy of Cervantes. Like the Library of Babylon in Borges in almost endless repositories, this tale also makes one wonder what happens to all the abandoned dream manuscripts so long pursued by their hapless authors. This novel raises the painful question why on occasion, some writers' works can actually be too good to publish, others too personally dense to understand, and yet so many others too dull to finish. Peopled with plausible, if eccentric characters - exactly the kind who would inhabit such a library - and beautifully illustrated, this LAST RESORT LIBRARY is worthy of a good read by a fire with a vintage armagnac in hand, imparting a knowing smile to the soul. I can't wait for the next Finkel work.
