Last of the Rivermen is a unique first person biographical account of the driftnet fishery on the lower Columbia River in the years after WWII (the author was a 17 y/o boat puller for one of the most experienced captains on the Columbia, who had fished the river since just after the turn of the century), as well as a portrait of people and places on the lower Columbia that includes the ethnography of the people who fished the river. It is quite charming. I have read this book several times over the past ten years, and while I rate it at four stars (for editing only, not for content), it is more importantly a true story with great authenticity and a hint of romance. Fadich evokes a time of transition that that is quite wonderful to this reader.
