Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The Last Soul grew out of a challenge thread on put there by my Evernight editor, a Moderator on Litopia, and was originally a 1,000 word story about an incubus. It also started out as an erotic horror story.

When my editor read it, she asked me to expand it to 10,000 words, with the idea we would sub it as a short story. I changed the incubus to a succubus, and originally Faina and Jace didn't end up together. When Faina gave up her chance at humanity to free Jace from the contract for his soul, she also asked her demon boss to wipe his memory of her. The story ended with her watching a YouTube video of Jace cutting a ribbon on a new youth center his Foundation had built, while Morgan, now his wife, at this side.
It quickly became obvious to me this story begged to be a romance, so I once increased the word count, wrote a reason for Morgan to be out of Jace's life forever, and The Last Soul was born.
I hope you enjoy it! It's the first book in my Seduced By A Demon series. Book 2, Hunted, is available on Amazon as well. Books 3 and 4 will be coming soon from Evernight Publishing!

From the Inside Flap

Faina donned a Betsey Johnson flowered dress and wedge sandals, then materialized a few blocks from where Jace worked.
It felt so good to be outdoors. The warm air was soothing, the traffic noises and bustling crowds reminding her of New York City. Faina didn't often get nostalgic for her human life, but today she did. If she succeeded in this mission, she'd be human again. Warm weather, noisy crowds and city life would be her reality, not simply the realm in which she was allowed to work.
Unless Mastema had tricked her. No. She wouldn't think about that now. She had a job to do. She took her time, peering in shop windows and trying to look like just another California trust fund babe out for a stroll on a bright summer day. The fact nearly every man pounding the pavement tripped over his own two feet as she strolled past wasn't lost on her. She didn't have the baby face, long blonde curls, and legs up to there for nothing.
She avoided eye contact. It was enough to leave them with her scent, they'd have trouble getting it out of their head for weeks, but to look them in the eyes would be downright cruel. Even when she'd been alive all she'd had to do was turn her baby blues in a man's direction and he followed her around like a dog in heat. She'd made more money for Madame Lily during her first six months than most of her girls made over the course of two years.
As she made her way to the entrance of the 770 Wilshire Building, she caught a whiff of burned toast. She ducked into the nearest shop and pressed her nose to the plate glass window, scanning the crowd for a familiar face. She'd only seen Mastema appear once in human form. He'd looked ridiculous dressed in a long coat and cowboy hat on the streets of Aurora Nebraska, population four thousand two hundred and twenty-five as of last year. His bad-boy Western get-up would have been more appropriate for Arizona in the late nineteenth century.
Either Mastema hadn't been the demon she smelled or he'd already evaporated. The sidewalks were filled with six foot blondes and men who looked like they walked off the cover of GQ. Not a weird outfit or menacing swagger in sight.
"Help you, Miss? You need mani and pedi today? We have new summer colors look perfect on you."
Faina whirled around to face the ancient Vietnamese woman. She'd ducked into a nail salon. Her senses had been so focused on the burnt toast smell and Mastema's human form she hadn't noticed the acrid smell of nail polish.
"No, not today. I'm sorry. I've got to go."
Faina opened the door and strode to the parking garage entrance of the building. On the way a clock struck five. The smell of burnt toast wafted from a nearby taco stand. Had that been what she smelled? Tacos? She was jumping at shadows. That wasn't like her.
She made her way to Jace's sports car by visualizing it. As the flood of workers poured into the garage, she hoped Jace would stay calm when he saw her. She was taking a risk as there would be plenty of witnesses if he wigged out.
He was busy scrolling through messages on his phone as he sauntered to his car, and didn't see her until she stepped in front of him as he was about to open the door.
"Oh Jesus. Holy fu--" His warm brown eyes opened wide and he visibly swallowed. "How did you... you're real. Holy shit."
"Get in your car, Jace. People are staring. One of them looks like he's going to take a picture with his cell."
The lie snapped him out of his trance. He unlocked the doors and she slid into the passenger seat. "Start the car but don't move yet."
He stared straight ahead as the engine roared to life. Beads of sweat pooled at his hairline. She could hear his heart pounding. When she reached up to wipe his forehead he moaned. "It's all right, Jace. Just try to relax."
"I don't understand." His voice shook.
"You don't need to. Wait until the garage clears out a bit. Then we'll leave."
            "I... I have a dinner date. A family friend. I have to go. I don't want to but... I... I should."
"Do you want me to leave?"
He looked into her eyes with the most desperate longing she'd ever seen on a human face. A flash of apprehension shivered down her spine, unbalancing her. She was going to hurt him. Badly. He'd lose everything. His home, the Foundation, his dinner date, maybe even this fancy sports car. And some kid wouldn't have a place to sleep on a cold, winter night, or a youth group to keep him off the streets.
The men she brought to Mastema were bad-to-the-bone to begin with. They just needed a little help to push them in the right direction. The inevitable direction, as he liked to call it. But Jace Blackmon was a good guy.
Then why does Apollyon want him? But what if he didn't want Jace? What if Jahi was right and Mastema had forged the contract?
"Faina." His whisper pulled her back to the present. Until she had proof to the contrary, it was Jace's soul or her eternal torment as one of Mastema's sex slaves. This was self-preservation. Nothing more.
She looked into his eyes and smiled "Yes, Jace?"
"Please don't leave, Faina."

Summary: Faina has a mission....just one last soul and Mastema will finally fulfill the contract and send her back to the human realm. The only problem is she doesnt understand what Hell wants with Jace. On all accounts he is kind, always helping others, and an all around nice guy. He also just happens to be gorgeous, sexy, and extremely good in bed. Jace has never met anyone quite like Faina. She matches his needs in the bedroom as well. Though he sometimes finds her elusive on providing answers to some personal questions, he cant help the fact that he is falling for her. Neither can Faina who starts to feels guilty about what she may have to do.

My Thoughts: What can be said except WOW!! Carolyn Rosewood started out the story with a bang. i always say, if you can get my attention in the first few pages, its a winner, and she had it and kept it. Mastema is your evil villain and she paints him so well that i was sitting there glaring at my kindle every time his name was brought up. You really feel for Faina cause her story is so sad and in your head you're secretly wishing something good will happen for her even if she comes off kinda ruthless at first. So when she is with Jace, who is your typical good guy you are rooting for them and hoping its not just cause of her demon powers. Let me tell you, there i some extremely hot scenes in this story that will burn the sheets. Rosewood managed to make this story intriguing, sexy, and at moments sweet. I cant wait to read the next one.

I recieved a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Hot, steamy, sensual and sweet. Yes, sweet. The Last Soul combines all of these delightful elements, adds a liberal dose of paranormal, a couple of mesmerizing characters and results is a combustive not-to-be-missed story!

I loved Jace to pieces. He is wonderful, kind-hearted, fun, intelligent and caring – not to mention hot. He is engaged to be married to a woman who is “perfect”. The draw back? He LOVES sex and she thinks sex equals burning in hell. Not such a great match up.

Faina has been through a lot in life (and death). She yearns for her freedom and is told that if she snatches Jace’s pure soul, she will be granted just that. But there is just one tiny problem… Well, you will have to read to find out what that is!

Carolyn Rosewood does an unbelievable job bringing both Jace and Faina to life. She breathes pure desire, along with a sensual sweetness to both of these characters. Many of the scenes will have you fanning yourself and gripping the pages as you fall under the spell of these two. Their chemistry is hot and combustible, without a doubt, yet their yearning for more than just the pleasure of the flesh will make you sigh in romantic splendor.

Though not overly long, at 85 pages, this story is written incredibly well and the length is perfect for telling the story of these two people. I cannot wait to read book 2 in this series Hunted! If you love heat-filled sweetness, hot love scenes, paranormal and great characters, this is the perfect book for you and one that I highly recommend!

Favorite Quote: He looked into eyes the color of a clear blue sky. A perfect summer, cloudless sky. Eyes so deep he could fall in and never surface. Fear wrapped itself around his heart like an icy shroud. He knew somehow if he touched her there was no turning back.

Carolyn has an enviable writing style which goes straight to the bull's-eye. No superfluous nattering for her. In The Last Soul, I was plunged headlong into the action with heroine Faina (who's been dead for 150 years) being bullied by her demon "boss" Mastema - a hideous creature you never wish to meet. Faina's "job" is to seduce evil humans into signing their souls away and she's very proficient at her job. This will be her last assignment, after which she'll be made human again which is her dearest wish. All she has to do is seduce Jace Blackmon. The only problem is, he has a squeaky-clean past. Oh, and there's another difficulty: Faina falls in love with him - not a good sign if she has to get this handsome hunk to sign his soul away.

Carolyn is skilled at witty repartee and this short novel had me grinning from ear to ear. Faina's sassy character puts an intriguing spin on the plot and there are no clear answers until the story romps to an end. If you like sizzling sex scenes then you'll not be disappointed, but for those who prefer "subtlety", these episodes (and there are quite a few of them) are also romantic, loving and sweet. The author has managed to combine the two styles with success which I think will please everyone.

I had a wonderful time throughout this story but I had to have a fan close by (and that's a warning!). Carolyn has created characters you'll care about and remember forever.
