From Publishers Weekly

Three Soviet spies living undetected among Washington insiders for fifteen years confront the collapse of the Soviet Union in this well-wrought thriller.

From Library Journal

With the Soviet Union breaking up, what's a KGB spy in the United States to do? Ash, a special spy raised with several others as an American, is planted as a reporter for the Washington Post. Others of his group are in U.S. government, universities, and so on. Now Ash suspects that David, his American contact and leader, may have drifted from Moscow to work for other governments. After an attempt is made on his life, Ash seeks out members of the group to find out what's going on and what should be done. Along the way he meets a sexy talk-show hostess who is drawn into the chase and his heart. Lots of melodrama, excitement, a touch of sex, and some philosophizing about loyalties add up to a very readable thriller that will appeal to most readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cold War endgame., August 24, 2004

This review is from: The Last Spy (Hardcover)
James Ash is a reporter for the Washington Post. At least that's his cover. He's really a Soviet spy, one of an elite group of agents groomed since childhood to infiltrate key institutions in the United States. But something has changed. His recent assignments bear little or no relation to the national interests of the USSR. And to further complicate matters, there is a continual barrage of news from Moscow pointing to the Soviet Union's imminent disintegration.
As a result, Ash does not know whom to trust, where to take his orders from or where his loyalties should lie. He falls for a girl named Jennifer, the host of a call in radio talk show. But can he really trust her? Could the FBI or even the KGB have sent her his way?
The Last Spy is an intriguing novel which captures the all consuming paranoia that is an unavoidable occupational hazard for any undercover agent. It has a sufficient amount of suspense and there are several very clever plot devices.
All in all, this is an intelligently contructed spy novel which most readers should find quite entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best spy novels around, October 14, 1997
This review is from: The Last Spy (Paperback)
A tale of murder, mystery, and intrigue. The Last Spy is a spynovel that ranks up there with the writing of Ian Flemming. It is ameticulously woven bit of fiction, that keeps you turning the pages until the very end. I would recomend this book to anyone who enjoys a great thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the great cold war spy novels, December 9, 2011
This review is from: The Last Spy (Paperback)
This book was written 20 years ago and set right at the end of an era - When Communism was collapsing in the Soviet Union and the world was changing. In this uncertain moment of history three Americans (who we soon learn are actually Russians) navigate the present and try to survive to create their own individual futures - independent of Kremlin control.

Within this story is tense suspenseful espionage sequences, life and death action, a love triangle, plus a mysterious backstory that involves the lead character's eerie childhood.

In a way this book feels years ahead of its time with the concept of children being manufactured into spies. It has a similar premise to another excellent thriller/spy novel I read recently called The Ninth Orphan and which you will also enjoy if you like The Last Spy.
