Witness a young peasant s meteoric rise to power in this action-packed martial arts saga from renowned director Lu Chuan.  During the tumultuous last days of the Qin dynasty, the Commander of the era s most powerful army recognizes great potential in an inexperienced laborer named Liu. Review

An unforgettable epic re-creation of the birth of the Han dynasty, terrifying and lyrical...Spectacularly beautiful and achingly poetic --The Hollywood Reporter

... accurate comparison for The Last Supper is Game of Thrones , as the film is filled with the same kind of deceptions, shifting allegiances and dark political scheming, with plenty of surprises and ruthless twists along the way for viewers unfamiliar with historical events --BeyondHolywood.com

I'm a little conflicted over my impression of Lu Chuan's historical epic "The Last Supper" from 2012. As a fan of the director, I had high hopes and expectations. But while the film is a stunning piece of work to look at, I never felt emotionally connected to the material. His interpretation of the Nanking Massacre "City of Life and Death" is a harrowing piece of filmmaking not soon to be forgotten. You can't watch the horrors depicted in that movie and be unaffected. And that visceral connection is what I'm most missing after seeing "The Last Supper." It takes a momentous era of Chinese history and pits the principle characters against one another in an ultimate play for power. It is a complicated portrait of betrayal and paranoia, but the screenplay never really develops the characters and friendships in a way to maximize the emotional complexities of the piece. This should have been a devastating story of how allies can become enemies. Instead, the film remains a somewhat remote endeavor. Beautiful, to be sure, but chilly overall.

The movie chronicles the end of the Qin Dynasty in 206 BC and the rise of the first Emperor of the Han Dynasty. You might appreciate the movie a bit more if you have a pre-existing knowledge of the events of this era. I, myself, am certainly no expert in Chinese history but had no problem following the narrative flow of the movie which shifts between time periods and often embraces flashbacks to advance the story. The non-linear structure, in fact, is well employed throughout. The movie tells the story of Liu Bang (Ye Liu) as he is settled on his deathbed tended to by his rather unscrupulous and conniving wife.

Capturing history on film is never an easy prospect. Follow it too closely, and you risk alienating the audience under a wealth of minute detail that – while important – may ultimately mean little to the viewers. Follow it too loosely, and you risk glorifying events without enough substance to bring them alive in the needed context. Still, the most important aspect in successfully conveying an era to those watching is to build in some overriding emotional attachment: the key players must require audiences to invest in them, to believe in them, to witness the struggle as if walking alongside them. If you don’t do that, then what is all of it worth … except maybe some industry praise for your production detail?

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and/or characters. If you’re the type of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I’d encourage you to skip down to the last three paragraphs for my final assessment. Ay carumba.

It was okay. Nothing really seperated this movie from the rest of the pack in the genre. It wasn't a bad movie and i enjoyed watching it, But it isn't anything special.

This Chinese movie is much better than the 47 Ronin. The story of the movie is trying to introduce the history (or just a story) of the wars among 3 nations in the past. This story true or not does not matter, but the designs of the actors' dresses are beautiful and true to history. In my opinion, the color of this movie is first rated. It is a good buy.

Not a lot of action, a real drama piece. Honestly it was slow and boring to me. If you're not into much action, this movie is for you, if you are........consider another.

Last Supper wasted my time. I was expecting more actions. Just look at the cover! I was going to write more but the more I think about the movie and more pissed off I get. Two stars.
