Weird Wonders, December 11, 2008
This review is from: The Last Temptation of Elvis: An All-Star Tribute (Audio CD)
Elvis, was the king, and he was a very cool king.
These two discs were assembled by The New Musical Express in 1990 for the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy program. Twenty five artists covering songs from the movies that Elvis made in the late fifties, and throughout the sixties. From Robert Plant, tearing up: "Let's Have A Party" and Bruce Springsteen, rolling the dice with: "Viva Las Vegas" and those crazy Pogues, smashing: "Got A Lot O' Livin' To Do" this is quite unlike anything else.
Elvis, is known for appearing in some less than stellar films, but you can't argue with the timeless classics that were featured in those films.
With: " There's No Room To Rhumba In A Sports Car" performed by Vivian Stanhall and "Rock-A-Hula-Baby" presented by Pop Will Eat Itself, the music featured here would make Mozart move his bones.
Dion, sounds great ripping through: "Mean Woman Blues" and The Jesus & Mary Chain, lay waste with a wall of sludge production to: "Guitar Man." Aaron Neville, does a moving version of: "Young & Beautiful" and Fuzzbox, brings in a techno-clanging hammered rendition of: "Trouble" and Sir Paul McCartney, camps it up a little with that favorite from the Cavern Club: "It's Now Or Never."
The mixes of musical styles and the wide variety of different artists featured makes this a very interesting and enertaining two hours of music. As the reputation of these songs as not being great has been widely writen about, I have found this set to be one of the best and original takes on music that has been 'slighted' in the past.
Even with a bunch of Americans featured here, these two discs sound very British, to my ears. This is like letting the loonies run BBC 1, for a few hours, just to mess up your head. These artists, really change and shake up the music that is featured here on these two CD's. I will always admit that I am always looking for something a little different to listen to, and: "The Last Temptation Of Elvis" fits the role as not normal...
As a bonus, there is along long-lost studio recording of Elvis {the real one!} doing three takes of: "King Of The Whole Wide World." And for a time, this man was indeed THE KING. He won't be forgotten anytime soon.
This set isn't easy to find nowadays, but if it does turn up in the used CD bin at your favorite music den, scoop it up...and do the Crawfish!
Four Stars!!!

Excellent and Varied Tribute to the King, April 25, 2009
This review is from: The Last Temptation of Elvis: An All-Star Tribute (Audio CD)
Many great versions of Elvis movie tunes (although I don't recall "It's Now Or Never" being in an Elvis flick), plus several that are instantly forgettable. Springsteen's take on "Viva Las Vegas" (used in the movie 'Honeymoon In Vegas' but for some reason left off the soundtrack) is the real find here. Hard-rockin' with no-frills, he has fun with it, even mentioning Bakersfield at the end. Tanita Tikaram and Nanci Griffith both handle their ballads sweetly and tenderly. Another highlight is Aaron Neville's live (supper club?) version of "Young and Beautiful", praising Elvis while he quizzes the audience (no one seems to know that Elvis did the song originally).
Robert Plant, who in previous years surprised many Zep fans by covering Elvis tunes, turns in an interesting version of "Let's Have A Party", as do The Pogues with "Got A Lot O'Livin' To Do". Paul McCartney hits the high note in "It's Now Or Never" before hamming it up at the end, and Dion - the only true Elvis contemporary of the lot - proves he can still get it done, with a fine bluesy take on "Mean Woman Blues."
Hall and Oates give "Can't Help Falling In Love" a Philly-Soul treatment with mixed results, and Lemmy's metallic heart is certainly in the right place on "Blue Suede Shoes" ("'ang on"). Jeff Healey should also be mentioned for his fine version of "Down In The Alley."
Pop Will Eat Itself turns in the most experimental track on this collection with "Rock-A-Hula-Baby". A great response to Public Enemy's Elvis-bashing on "Fight The Power" (they even sample the rappers here), and the "Kiiinnnnggg" chant in the background is an especially nice touch.
Elvis himself closes things with outtakes from "King of the Whole Wide World" - one of his finest and most overlooked soundtrack recordings (from 'Kid Galahad').
All in all, even with its shortcomings, one of the best Elvis tributes put together so far. And don't miss the humorous liner notes that include Q & A with the artists, covering a variety of Elvis topics.

Last Temptation of Elvis, May 7, 2009
This review is from: The Last Temptation of Elvis: An All-Star Tribute (Audio CD)
An authentic rarity, this double CD set was originally a charity project for legendary weekly British music mag the NME. Like the name suggests, its a cover album of Elvis tracks from his movies. This isn't parody, mind. This is a labour of love from the King's famous fans.
Every track is a highlight. Includes stand out tracks by legends like Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Aaron Neville. What lifts it above the ordinary are amazing tracks by the stars of the long-ago, late 80s - featuring Holly Johnson, the Primitives and the Blow Monkeys. The Pop Will Eat Itself number "Rock-a-Baby-Hula" is alone worth whatever you'll pay for this album.
