Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Veteran war correspondent Murray Sayle journeys west across Canada at a time when sections of the country's "national dream" - its vast transcontinental railroad - faced extinction. In his 7,000-mile adventure, Sayle discovers Mounties, moose and a colorful assortment of railroad men and women. He also shares glimpses of a lesser-known Canada - fishermen of the Maritime provinces, Indian settlements on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, polar bears frolicking and cowboys in the prairies - all loosely linked by the now resurgent transcontinental railway.

I have seen this as a series on Channel 4 in the UK, a few years ago, and I was amazed by the fantastic array of characters Murray meets on the journey, as well as enjoying the fantastic countryside of Canada, and also some amusing moments, such as when Murray tries to immitate a moose!!

My husband John and I catch the last train across Canada again and again. Murray Sayles, with his droll wit, is an ideal host, bringing out the richness and color of every person he meets along the rails. The scenery is gorgeous, the film editing is downright poetic, there is dreamy music--from the handsome young Cree crooning "Polar Bear Express" to the talented baggage man, Bill Hoffmeister, who melts your heart singing "Boxcar Painted Blue". We never tire of this enjoyable journey and we just urge you to get aboard!
