About the Author

Lois Hjelmstad and her husband, Les, live in Englewood, Colorado. They have a daughter, three sons, and twelve grandchildren. She has taught piano, music theory, and composition for many years.

A year after being diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), she was diagnosed with breast cancer, followed by a modified radical mastectomy and radiation therapy. The next year, she had a second modified radical mastectomy.

In response to the emotional and physical challenges of those events, she wrote the book, "Fine Black Lines: Refections on Facing Cancer, Fear and Loneliness."

"Fine Black Lines" opened doors for Lois to speak about breast cancer issues. She has given over 400 presentations throughout the United States, as well as in England and Canada.

Now Hjelmstad explores further issues of relationships and grief in her second book, "The Last Violet: Mourning My Mother."

Her articles and excerpts have appeared in many publications, including: American Medical News, American Journal of Nursing, Your Health, Administrative Radiology Journal and ParentGuide. She was featured in the October 2001 issue of Rosie, The Magazine. She appeared on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" on October 2, 2001.

Her mission is to bring clarity, validation, and solace to others.

More About the Author

In 1990 I planned to continue teaching piano to children as long as I could stand in my tennis shoes. But finding three primary cancers in my left breast shocked me to the toes of those shoes. The night before my first mastectomy, I wept as I wrote the poem, "Goodbye, Beloved Breast." Other poems followed. My oncologist said, "Do something with these."

So I added journal entries and reflections and wrote a book, Fine Black Lines: Reflections on Facing Cancer, Fear and Loneliness (1993, 2003). It was a bit out of character that I agreed to appear nude from the waist up on the cover of the October 1993 issue of Colorado Woman News. It is a bit unusual that my husband, Les, and I traveled over 400,000 miles mostly by car) while I spoke more than 550 times in all 50 United States, England, and Canada.

In 2001, Rosie Magazine (formerly McCall's) featured me and I appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell Show.

In 2002 I wrote The Last Violet: Mourning My Mother. For our 50th wedding anniversary I promised to write a book for Les. It took 11 years, but This Path We Share: Reflecting on 60 Years of Marriage came out in April 2010.

We live in Englewood, Colorado, and have four children, fourteen grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strongly moving, deeply personal account, November 4, 2002
This review is from: The Last Violet: Mourning My Mother (Paperback)
"The Last Violet: Mourning My Mother" is the strongly moving and emotional reflections of Lois Tschetter Hjelmstad as she travels from regret and pain to peace and acceptance after losing her mother. The author opens her heart and provides the reader a voyeuristic view inside the strong emotions accompanying her journey. It is hard to read the book without feeling her pain and travelling along with her on her journey to peace. For anyone that has lost a loved one the book offers a roadmap to working through the grief as well as the solace of knowing they are not alone and their emotions are normal. For those who have not lost a loved one it brings the realization that sooner or later we will all experience such a loss and we should use our time with others wisely while they are alive.

Very personal in nature, it is a highly recommended read for those working through such a loss and anyone who wants an understanding of the grieving process. A recommended read for everyone else.

This review is from: The Last Violet: Mourning My Mother (Paperback)
The Last Violet: Mourning My Mother is a powerful memoir and moving testimony of one woman's long struggle to accept the grief of her mother's passing. Written by Lois Tschetter Hjelmstad (an experienced international speaker to more than 400 cancer support groups) and highly recommended reading for anyone seeking to come to grips with the pain of personal loss, The Last Violet deals candidly and intimately with the process of grief from the initially depression to an ultimate acceptance and peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Honest and Vulnerable Love, December 15, 2010
This review is from: The Last Violet: Mourning My Mother (Paperback)
I read this book in two sittings, captured by Lois' honesty and vulnerability and the sincerity of her desire to understand her mother as well as herself as her mother's daughter. What a wonderful, candid record of the need for love between mother and daughter. Reading the book will help many, many daughters when their time comes to say good-bye. By having the courage to record her feelings and then artistically pull them together into The Last Violet, Lois has opened a door to the heart for all daughters.
