This review is from: Last Winter in the Copper Country (Audio CD)
You must definitely hear this group. They are fantastic; their talent is supreme. I originally heard Steppin' In It while browsing the Live Music Archive. The group had provided a number of their live concerts to the Archive and I listened to some. They were so good and I enjoyed listening so much that I looked for recordings they might have made; this is one. The group, based in Lansing Michigan, consists of Joshua Davis, twin brothers Andy and Joe Wilson and Dominic John Suchyta. I think their music is terrific. It's not easy to classify although classifying is not really necessary--it combines so much -- folk, blues, old time music, Cajun, and swing -- using instruments that particularly stand out throughout the album including harp, Cajun accordion, dobro, horns, fiddle -- with great picking, rhythm, and very pleasing harmonies and vocals. The album has both old and new tunes. "The Butcher's Girl", an old tune, is done so well! A great song in the first place, the group does it their way -- with terrific beat and tempo, and the wonderful, haunting voice of Joshua Davis singing the lyrics. The album borrows from Joshua's memories of growing up in northern Michigan (a cold place it seems). "Last Winter in the Copper Country" is about that. (In fact the song debuted live during a blizzard at the Michigan House in Calumet in October 2001). "Gold and Silver" has a fresh rhythm with great Zydeco accordion. "Over the Waterfall/Mississippi Sawyer" is a wonderful lively instrumental you will really enjoy.... The album is an excellent blend of old and new, traditional and original. This is definitely a terrific album by a stand out band. Hey guys, you're great.
