Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Friends Devin O'Hara and Katey Sullivan know they must hide the three wolflings they have discovered, for Squire Watson has vowed to shoot every wolf in Ireland. Paul Chandler, the town bully, learns the children's secret and reveals the pups' hiding place; Squire Watson kills two of them, but one--Sdhoirm--escapes. Devin raises Sdhoirm in the barn until he is grown; then he must set the animal free. Devin catches glimpses of him over the years, and finally Sdhoirm returns to the barn to see Devin for the last time. Transported into the distant past through Malterre's haunting, powerful imagery, readers will be held until the book's last page by his persistent sense of urgency. Authentic dialect and 18th-century details bring to life this eloquent, stirring novel, in which Devin's precious secret becomes the reader's own. Ages 9-14.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic., June 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Last Wolf of Ireland (Hardcover)
Wow, I absolutely loved this book. I wish it were a little longer, but it was really great. It really brings out events that could've happened in the past, and it makes you realize what people do to the most beautiful of God's creatures. This book is a real tear-jerker and a cliff-hanger all in one, but it is one of those that you have to love. Maybe if more people read this book, we will realize that animals are a precious gift of life, and we need to enjoy them as much as we can. All in all, I loved this book, and it has earned the title of being under one of the best books I have read.
