Who Will be the Last Woman Standing?, August 26, 2009
This review is from: The Last Woman Standing (Paperback)
"The Last Woman Standing", by author Tia McCollors, introduces two God-fearing characters, Scott "Ace" Bowers, a pilot with a great career with a major airline, and Lynette Bowers, a dentist with a growing practice, and Ace's ex-wife. Together, Ace and Lynnette have two beautiful teenagers - Jada and Carmen, and although their divorce was finalized four years ago, they have remained friends. Sounds perfect right? Wrong! There's more to this story -- Sheila, Ace's girlfriend of two years, is beautiful - hair in place, nails and toes flawlessly manicured, designer clothes and $1.01 in her bank account. Sheila tries to "live for the Joneses", and is one paycheck away from being a homeless person wearing Prada.
Out of the blue, Ace and Lynette begin to "see" each other in a different light and old feelings rekindle. Sheila begins to feel insecure and can sense that something is amiss and decides that she will not step aside and sit on the bench and allow Ace to slip through her manicured fingers. With the help of her childhood friend, "Conniving Cassandra", the two decide to come up with a plan that will help Sheila retain her man.
Along the way, the reader will come to know a number of other interesting characters - Lynette's parents, Pop Walter and Mama Claudette whose words of wisdom ring true; Grandma Toot (who is a hoot!), who affectionately calls Lynette, "Nettie"; Lynette's best friend, Audrey, who attempts to play "match-maker" for Lynette, and at the same time enjoy a happy Christian marriage with her loving husband, Kirk; Lynette's business partner, Dr. Tonia Singletary; Frank, the artist and player; Ace's close friend and fraternity brother, Kenny, who is always available to offer sound Christian advice, and a host of other characters to compliment the story.
Although lengthy, the book is inspirational and has a profound message of lessons learned as we find our way, yet God is always there to guide us through anything - albeit good, bad or ugly. It is also the story of two women - both with diverse backgrounds, yet they each have similar vulnerabilities when it pertains to the man they both love - Ace. When it is all said and done - who will be the last woman standing?

Good From the Beginning to the End!, September 13, 2009
This review is from: The Last Woman Standing (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I've read in a long time! As an avid reader, I've tossed many books aside after reading a few chapters... no such thing with this one! As a matter of fact, I was up to the wee hours of the morning reading. Gotta catch up on my sleep now that I've finished it. :)
I read the other reviews, and as everyone has given a brief synopsis, I think I'll just give a few of the overall lessons that stood out to me.
The story of a family given a second chance reinforces that God holds the sanctity of family and marriage in very high regard. Throughout the story, I laughed, shouted "amen" and even cried. It was easy to relate to both Sheila and Lynnette. Cassandra made me want to just "bop her" and give her a clue.
The primary thing that came out of this story for me was that God is in control. No matter how we try to orchestrate our own lives and manipulate situations or even the lives of others, it is His plans that prevail. It also reminds me that we need to continuously build an intimate relationship with God so that we can discern when He is speaking to us. If we don't, we may miss out on the most beautiful gifts He wants to give us.
There are so many themes running through this book like forgiveness, reconciliation, and spiritual discernment. Ultimately, it is a story of hope told through some very realistic characters, some who remind me of my own family like Grandma Toot and Lynnette's mother.
The Last Woman Standing is good from beginning to end! I didn't want it to end, so I'll be looking for a`sequel soon. Hint, hint, hint . . . Mrs. McCollors.

Great Rainy-Day Reads, September 22, 2009
When I first got this book, I thought "this is too long," but as I got to reading, I fell in love with the characters and couldn't put it down. A few times, I was tempted to turn to the last few chapters and find out the ending, but then there were twists that I knew I'd miss if I skipped ahead. I have to say, though, I felt really badly for Sheila in the end. Maybe she can come back - like Jasmine did in Victoria Christoper Murray's books! LOL! Anyway, be sure you can block off some time to read it because once you get in there, it'll be hard to stop!
