5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I found this one first!!!
I can't tell you how many baby name books I read before I found this. I didn't just want a list of names, I wanted help chosing, and this was the only book that was useful. It helped us avoid names about to be too popular and gave us interesting alternatives. Really, don't waste your money, buy this one first.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much Hollywood gossip!
All the information about origins and histories of names is wonderful-- both interesting and helpful. But the authors are too obsessed with what Hollywood celebrities are naming their kids, and all that gossipy fluff gets rather tiresome after awhile. Please-- take out the fluff, and use that space to give us a concise meaning for each name. THEN this book will truly...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous choice if you find long lists of names boring!, January 24, 1999
By A Customer
A very opinionated, very fun to read book. Does not give many meanings of names, rather the authors concentrate on how the names are perceived today. Has a lot of unusual choices - not for you if you love very popular names. Could stand to be updated now, but still my favorite baby name book ever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best out of 7, December 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Last Word on First Names: The Definitive A-Z Guide to the Best and Worst in Baby Names by America's Leading Experts (Paperback)
I own 7 baby name books, and this is by far my favourite. If you're interested in baby naming trends (and want to avoid a trendy name), this is the book for you. No doubt about it: this book is very judgemental (but people are judged by their names whether we like it or not). However, the writers seem to be well-rounded and intelligent so I often agree with their comments. The best thing about this book is how the writers discuss the names in current cultural context. I find this much more useful than a list of names with their obscure definition (who cares that Calvin means bald?). This book is useful especially for first time parents who may not realize that Brittany, Emma and Tyler are not original. I'd like to see an updated version of this book (even though I probably won't have any more children, I just find this book so fun to read)

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the only baby name book you need!, July 17, 1998
By A Customer
Unlike boring name books with tons of lists, this one actually picks the best and worst names out there and gives you the authors personal opinions of them. And they have excellent taste! If you can't bear the thought of naming your baby Ashley or Brandon, this is the book for you.

I thought that the book was a very helpful tool in picking out my baby's name. When you give a baby a name it is going to last forever so choose it wisely. I recommend this book in doing so.

5.0 out of 5 stars An insightful, practical guide to choosing the perfect name!, March 14, 1998

This book gives down-to-earth advice about the realities of the modern and not so modern names. It doesn't just list the meaning of the name, it tells you what perceptions may be associated with that name. The best I've seen!

This book was so entertaining and insightful. Sure, sometimes it was opinionated, but it's nice to hear a few opinions about a name anyway. I really enjoyed their perspective. It's a few years old, however - go with the new edition: The Very Last Word on First Names. Haven't seen it, but it's sure to be good.

And by the way, anyone who thinks Catherine Earnshaw was SAINTLY has obviously never read "Wuthering Heights" for herself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting For Expectant Parents, March 10, 2001
This review is from: The Last Word on First Names: The Definitive A-Z Guide to the Best and Worst in Baby Names by America's Leading Experts (Paperback)
Organized alphabetically and by girls' and boys' names (pink and blue pages, respectfully), "The Last Word on First Names" is one of the better baby name compilations. The authors leave very few stones unturned, offer alternate spellings and like-names, and the meanings of a majority of the names. While they also include famous people's babies names, I didn't really care.

If there's a more up-to-date version I sujjest you get that one, as they comment on the going trends, etc., around each name.
